Vinícius Júnior is voicing his discontent over how referees treat him, arguing that players with flair like him, Lamine Yamal, and Julián Álvarez need better protection on the pitch.
Following Real Madrid’s thrilling 4-3 comeback win against Roma in the Champions League, the Brazilian forward opened up about his thoughts. He acknowledged he’s not at his best right now, but he assured fans he has “no doubt” he’ll return to top form soon.
His comments came right after he was handed a four-game ban in La Liga for a red card incident that saw him tug at an opponent’s hair and protest against the referee’s decision. “I don’t recall any other player getting a four-match suspension like this,” he remarked. “I was just trying to get the player in front of me out of the way, and it ended up being a red card. I was shocked.”
Vinícius argued that he didn’t deserve such a severe punishment, especially when he claims to have not used any offensive language toward the referee. “It seems like it’s always easy to pin the blame on me. The other team’s fans and the media will back that up. But I’m here to keep improving and show what I can do.”
He further explained his frustration with the officiating, stating, “I’ve been fouled 500 times, yet I’ve only seen five red cards issued. It feels like all the yellow cards go to players like me. We need to protect those who bring creativity to the game, like Lamine at Barcelona or Julián at Atleti.”
Real Madrid manager José Mourinho also weighed in, criticizing the timing of Vinícius’s suspension announcement. “Is it normal for a player from a Spanish team to learn about a four-match ban just two hours before an important match?” Mourinho questioned. “We were on the bus heading to the stadium when we found out. It’s a lack of respect.”
Vinícius, who hasn’t scored since August, was substituted in the 59th minute during the Roma match, before Madrid turned the game around. “I’m working hard to get back to my best,” he stated. “I know I’m not in peak form, but I’ve faced tougher challenges. Even when people doubted me, I’ve always stood up for this club, which is why I signed a six-year extension. I believe the goals will come back.”
On being substituted, he displayed a mature outlook. “Of course I was a bit annoyed; I want to play every match. But I understand it’s about the team’s needs. Sometimes you have to step back for others to step up.”
He has a solid relationship with Mourinho, adding, “He’s always straightforward with me. Sure, I was frustrated coming off today, but in the end, he was right—the team improved, and that’s what matters.” Vinícius was replaced by Endrick, who scored the equalizer before Antonio Rüdiger clinched the win late on.
Unfortunately for Vinícius, he will miss the upcoming clásico against Barcelona on October 25 due to his suspension.
