Uefa Pressures Fifa for Transparency on World Cup Dealings
Uefa is stepping up the pressure on Fifa, giving them just two weeks to provide critical documents related to Gianni Infantino's controversial World Cup sell-off scheme. In a letter from Uefa's Theodore Theodoridis to Fifa's general secretary Mattias Grafström, a detailed eight-page document was included, containing over 50 probing questions about Fifa's governance over the past year. These inquiries touch on various topics, including the questionable sale of 20% of Fifa's commercial rights, the Folarin Balogun situation, peace prize discussions, and Fifa's ties with Donald Trump, along with preparations for the upcoming presidential election. Uefa's latest move comes on the heels of a Fifa council meeting in Zurich, the first since the Fifa Forward Enterprise controversy broke out in July. Infantino faced questions during the gathering but notably avoided giving clear answers, instead suggesting council members submit their queries in writing ahead of the next meeting set for December 16 in Doha. In his letter, Theodoridis expressed frustration, stating, "These explanations have not begun satisfactorily to address a number of fundamental questions raised by Council members." He emphasized the urgency of receiving comprehensive answers, demanding a written response and all supporting documents by November 2, with any refusals requiring justifications. The document submitted by Uefa strongly criticizes Infantino’s leadership, especially as he appears poised to be re-elected unopposed next year. However, Uefa is increasingly optimistic about fielding a challenger before the nomination deadline on November 18. Moreover, Uefa is seeking clarity on various significant decisions made by Fifa in the past year, including the unexpected relocation of the men’s World Cup draw from Las Vegas to Washington DC, the introduction of hydration breaks, and the extended 27-minute halftime at the World Cup final. Uefa’s statement raises serious concerns about potential conflicts of interest intertwined with significant decisions involving Infantino, the U.S. President, and associates linked to him. The organization is also questioning the rental costs for office space in Trump Tower and recent reports alleging undisclosed substantial payments made to Infantino in 2024. Additionally, Uefa is scrutinizing the presidential election scheduled for March, particularly the role of Bruno Chiomento, chair of Fifa's electoral committee, who has longstanding ties with Infantino. The document highlights Chiomento's close involvement with Fifa events, including a five-week stay at the 2026 World Cup covered by Fifa. Finally, Uefa has requested a full list of Fifa's VIP and VVIP guests at the World Cup final, noting that many appeared to have received preferential treatment over member association presidents and confederation secretaries general. Fifa has been approached for comment.
