UEFA is turning up the pressure on FIFA, sending a pointed letter that demands answers to 42 pressing questions about Gianni Infantino’s time as president and his connections, particularly with Donald Trump.
This urgent correspondence, penned by UEFA's secretary general, Theodore Theodoridis, was dispatched to FIFA's Mattias Grafstrom on Monday. The letter outlines a long list of concerns raised at last week’s FIFA Council meeting in Zurich.
Among the queries are detailed inquiries spanning eight pages, addressing 12 key areas, including ten potential conflicts of interest. Theodoridis emphasized that FIFA must respond within two weeks, pointing out that the explanations offered by Infantino during the meeting were insufficient.
Infantino admitted that mistakes were made, but Theodoridis insists that “fundamental questions” remain unanswered. UEFA is also requesting an immediate audio recording of the meeting, highlighting their demand for complete transparency from FIFA.
"These questions need immediate answers," Theodoridis stated firmly. "They cannot wait until the next FIFA Council meeting, nor can future governance reforms replace accountability for past decisions."
The document touches on various contentious issues, starting with the FIFA Forward Enterprise and the controversial proposal to sell a stake in World Cup tournaments. UEFA is seeking clarity on why such agreements were made without proper consultation with the FIFA Council and who authorized these decisions.
Questions also arise about the independence of investigations into FIFA’s governance and why documents are being withheld. UEFA demands that FIFA detail how it plans to address these serious concerns raised by Council members.
Financial matters are under scrutiny as well, particularly the justification behind selling a stake in World Cups valued at $20 billion when recent tournaments generated significantly less revenue.
Moreover, UEFA is questioning the rationale behind disbursing development funds to member associations while FIFA reportedly holds $6 billion in reserves. Theodoridis challenges why increased funding was tied to external investments instead of utilizing FIFA's own financial resources.
The letter also probes Infantino’s remuneration, highlighting a £1.3 million payment on top of his annual £4 million salary, which wasn’t disclosed in FIFA’s annual report. UEFA is seeking clarity on the tax implications of these payments and why they weren’t transparent.
The situation surrounding the Balogun case also raises eyebrows, especially after President Trump’s involvement. UEFA wants to know the nature of communications between FIFA officials and any external parties regarding this disciplinary matter.
Concerns extend to the integrity of FIFA’s electoral processes, with UEFA questioning whether Infantino’s re-election will be conducted fairly. The official campaign for the presidency began on April 30, 2026, and doubts linger about the independence of FIFA’s judicial bodies.
With these demands, UEFA is making it clear that accountability is essential, and it’s time for FIFA to step up and provide the transparency that the football community desires.
