Sunderland's perfect start in the Europa League came to an end as they battled to a 1-1 draw against Lech Poznan. While they remain unbeaten in Europe this season, this result halted their run of two consecutive victories over AZ Alkmaar and Torreense.
The match kicked off with excitement, and it was Sunderland who struck first. Timur Tutierov, in just his third competitive start since joining the academy in 2023, found the back of the net early on.
Sunderland could have doubled their lead when Malick Fofana hit the post, and Nordi Mukiele forced a solid save from Mateusz Lis. However, Poznan equalized in the 70th minute thanks to a low shot from substitute Leo Bengtsson.
Régis Le Bris made six changes to his lineup after a disappointing Premier League loss to Bournemouth, including a first start of the season for Habib Diarra, who was returning from injury.
The visitors took the lead just two minutes in. Nilson Angulo intercepted a sloppy pass from Lis, crossed to Tutierov, who comfortably headed home his first goal for Sunderland.
At the other end, Robin Roefs was forced into action, making a double save to deny both Patrik Wålemark and Antoni Kozubal’s header, while Diarra came close with a shot that hit the side netting.
Lech Poznan nearly leveled the score multiple times, with Pablo Rodríguez missing narrowly and Daniel Håkans flicking a one-on-one chance wide. Sunderland enjoyed a spell of possession, with Granit Xhaka having a shot saved and Fofana rattling the woodwork.
The second half saw Fofana fire over the bar, while Poznan sought to capitalize, with Wålemark scuffing a shot after a great solo run. Diarra and Angulo both had opportunities that were saved, with Lis putting in a strong performance.
Bengtsson, making an impact off the bench, missed an early chance but found the net with a well-placed shot following a corner rebound, leveling the match with 20 minutes to go.
Poznan almost took the lead moments later when Roefs made a stunning point-blank save against Michal Gurgul. Sunderland pushed for a winner, but Fofana's attempt went wide, and substitute Chris Rigg struck the roof of the net.
Meanwhile, in another Europa League clash, Juventus dropped their first points after a thrilling 2-2 draw with Rennes. Zeki Celik opened the scoring for Juve, but Rennes equalized through Musa Al-Taamari.
Boulaye Dia then put Rennes ahead with a penalty just before halftime. Nick Woltemade leveled for Juventus from the spot in the second half, and although they thought they had snatched a win late on, Jhon Lucumí's goal was disallowed for offside.
This result follows Juventus' heavy 3-0 defeat to Lazio in Serie A, marking a difficult period for the club.
In Conference League action, Hearts fell 2-0 to Trabzonspor despite a spirited performance, while Brighton struggled to find their rhythm in a goalless draw against Jablonec, leaving them with missed opportunities to score.
