In a captivating encounter, Manchester City rallied from behind twice to secure a thrilling 4-2 victory over Arsenal, keeping their flawless Women’s Super League campaign alive. This win also extends their lead over Arsenal to a daunting 10 points after just five matches, casting doubt on last season’s runners-up as they struggle to find form.
Arsenal, under head coach Renée Slegers, have managed to claim only one league win this season, and that was way back on the opening weekend. Despite the challenges, Slegers stated she has the unwavering support of the club's executives as the pressure mounts.
The atmosphere was quite subdued outside the Etihad Stadium ahead of the match, marking the first game since Manchester City received a guilty verdict from the Premier League. However, as soon as the whistle blew, the mood shifted dramatically, especially in the second half when City took command and their fans revelled in the action.
City had downplayed the external controversies leading up to this match, focusing instead on their performance. There were a few jabs from Arsenal supporters, but the real drama unfolded on the pitch, where the players were determined to make headlines.
Khadija “Bunny” Shaw thought she had found the back of the net in the first half, but her header was disallowed due to a foul on the goalkeeper. Meanwhile, Arsenal capitalized on a controversial moment just before half-time when Lisa Baum, who appeared offside, scored from a rebound after Ayaka Yamashita's save. The visiting fans erupted, but their joy was short-lived.
City responded almost immediately, with Lauren Hemp equalizing with a deflected shot right before the half-time whistle. To add to Arsenal's woes, Mariona Caldentey was forced off with an injury during the play, leaving her visibly upset and her team with a significant hole to fill.
After the break, Arsenal started strong but nearly conceded again when Shaw found herself one-on-one with the keeper, only to lose her footing at a crucial moment. Shortly after, disaster struck for City when Yui Hasegawa made an uncharacteristic error in her own box, allowing Alessia Russo to score with a well-placed shot, putting Arsenal back in the lead.
Russo’s goal was her first of the league season and gave a much-needed boost ahead of England’s World Cup qualifying playoff. For a time, it seemed like Arsenal might hold on, but then the tide turned with a triple substitution from City’s Andrée Jeglertz, which included the introduction of Kerstin Casparij.
The 26-year-old made an instant impact, scoring a stunning equalizer with her first touch, curling the ball into the net like a seasoned pro. Just moments later, Hemp netted again, slipping a shot through the legs of Arsenal’s Anneke Borbe to put City ahead.
With Arsenal's confidence waning, City finished the job when Shaw capitalized on a brilliant through-ball from Aoba Fujino, scoring with a low finish that made up for her earlier missed opportunity. It was a dramatic turnaround that showcased City’s resilience and attacking prowess.
