Sergej Jakirovic: Hull City's Inspirational Journey to the Premier League
You can’t miss it: Hull City is back and making waves in the Premier League. Streets are lined with bold banners declaring ‘We are Premier League,’ and messages like ‘Dare to Dream’ are popping up everywhere. It’s all thanks to Sergej Jakirovic, the man at the helm. "I’m incredibly proud of what we’ve achieved, and the fans feel the same way," Jakirovic tells Sky Sports. "Getting promoted to the Premier League is no small feat, and we know how challenging this journey can be. There will be highs and lows, but we’ve shown we can compete at this level." Spend just a little time with Jakirovic, and you quickly see why he’s such an inspiring figure. After a recent loss to Fulham, he remains unshakeable, radiating confidence and determination. "One defeat doesn’t mean we give up. No way! We’re focused on improving every day," he asserts. Under his guidance, Hull has firmly established itself in the top half of the Premier League, building on the dramatic Wembley victory from last May. This marks Hull's fourth promotion to the Premier League, but the last one was a decade ago. Having experienced ups and downs, including a stint in League One, this return feels particularly remarkable, especially since the team finished 21st the previous season. Jakirovic’s coaching career is marked by intriguing twists. He’s earned respect by winning titles in Bosnia and Croatia, but it was his successful stint with Turkey’s Kayserispor in 2025 that really set the stage for his current role. Taking over a team in dire straits, he transformed them into a top-four contender in just a few months. "Not many coaches start in the academy and make it to the Premier League like I have. It’s a huge privilege, and I’m proud of my journey," he reflects. "Opportunities like this don’t come easy, especially for someone from my background. You have to seize them when they arise." Jakirovic’s fighting spirit resonates with the city of Hull. "I’m a fighter by nature, and I’ll never back down. We’ll always have chances against any opponent. It’s about sticking together and following our tactical plan." Hull’s tactical approach has already bewildered some opponents this season, highlighted by a stunning 2-0 victory over Manchester United. They've also pulled off wins against Coventry and managed draws against tough teams like Aston Villa and Chelsea. "We’ve adopted a system that brings stability," he explains. Their 5-4-1 formation is structured to be defensively solid while still allowing for rapid counter-attacks. In fact, no team in the Premier League is transitioning the ball upfield faster. It’s crucial not to confuse their tactics with a passive approach. Hull is aggressive and presses high, which requires a bold mindset. "We play more courageously now, with better movement. Our possession stats may not be high, but we’re creating opportunities, and that’s what matters." Jakirovic emphasizes that the game isn’t just about controlling the ball. "It’s about how you create chances and challenge the opponents. We’ve brought in some talented players, but injuries have disrupted our plans." Take Hidemasa Morita, for instance. The 31-year-old midfielder joined from Sporting but has struggled to find his rhythm, participating in only a handful of training sessions since July. Likewise, striker Ilyas Ansah hasn’t seen action yet due to fitness issues, and other players are also sidelined. "We’ve retained a core from last season while adding quality players, but injuries can set you back," Jakirovic notes. He’s facing a significant challenge, with Tottenham Hotspur the only team with more players unavailable. "These new signings are meant to enhance our squad. They bring quality and potential. Each training session is a learning opportunity for them, and I’m focused on building this team together," he adds. The injury situation is just one of the many complexities in Jakirovic’s season. He even had to address an unusual incident involving two players flipping their cars near the training ground. It underscores the multifaceted role of a football manager. Dubbed ‘the professor’ in Croatia, he meticulously analyzes every match, focusing on the little details. But being a manager is more than tactics; it’s about connecting with players too. "Motivation and psychology are key parts of my job. We do everything we can to uplift the team. But who lifts me?" he muses. Despite the pressures, Jakirovic remains committed to steering Hull City towards greater heights.
