Mikel Arteta is feeling the pressure as he faces concerns about Bukayo Saka’s fitness following a troubling year of injuries. Saka is set to undergo an MRI scan to assess a thigh issue sustained during the Champions League clash against Bayern Munich, where he had to leave the pitch after showing signs of discomfort.
After the match, Arteta revealed that Saka had “quite a lot of fluid in the area,” complicating the assessment of his injury. With Saka definitely out for Saturday's match against Everton, there are fears he might be dealing with a grade-two tear, which could sideline him for up to six weeks.
Saka’s injury woes have been a recurring theme, as he missed significant time last season due to a string of issues including hamstring and hip injuries, tallying 11 separate injuries since September 2023. Arteta acknowledged that managing the young forward's workload has become a priority. “It’s certainly been different in the last year or so,” he remarked, discussing the escalating demands placed on all players. “The intensity of matches and the frequency of games are increasing, making it tough to handle.”
The Spaniard noted that they had already taken precautions by resting Saka ahead of a busy schedule, such as not starting him against Lille in the Champions League. “With three games in less than six days, we have to be strategic,” he explained. Every match is a battle, and the pressure to win is immense.
During the previous three seasons, Saka missed just three Premier League matches and made history by playing in 83 consecutive league games. Now approaching 300 appearances for Arsenal since joining at just seven years old, he recently signed a lucrative contract that places him among the club's top earners.
When asked about the possibility of burnout, especially given Saka’s early debut at 17, Arteta remained optimistic. “I don’t feel that way at all, but we need to create the right environment for him to thrive,” he said. “It’s crucial to manage his load effectively when he returns, ensuring he can still make an impact.”
In Saka’s absence, 16-year-old Max Dowman could get a chance to shine against Everton. Although he’s played just nine minutes in the league this season, Arteta is confident in his readiness. Dowman made headlines earlier this year as the youngest goalscorer in Premier League history against David Moyes's team.
“There’s a strong memory from that moment, and it’s something we’ll cherish for a long time,” Arteta said. “Max trains hard, and every opportunity he gets to play, he proves he can change the game. He will definitely see some minutes.”
