Lincoln City faced a harsh reality check on Wednesday night, suffering a 6-0 defeat to West Ham United while playing with just nine men. Coach Tom Shaw described the match as a "brutal experience" but remains adamant that this loss won't define their journey in the Championship.
The Imps were thrown into chaos early on, with two red cards issued within the first 23 minutes. Tom Hamer was sent off just two minutes into the game, followed by Conor McGrandles, leaving the team in what Shaw labeled an "impossible situation" against a West Ham side that is a strong contender for promotion.
It took until the 45th minute for Konstantinos Mavropanos to score the opening goal, but the floodgates opened in the second half. Goals from Edvin Austbo, Jarrod Bowen, and Pablo set the tone, with Tomas Soucek adding two late goals to cap off a disheartening evening for Lincoln.
Shaw, however, is optimistic. "In a weird way, I think our boys will come out a little bit stronger from going to the dark moments they've faced when down two men against that quality," he told BBC Sport. "This unique situation won’t define us."
West Ham, freshly relegated from the Premier League, presented a daunting challenge for Lincoln, who are back in the second tier for the first time in 65 years. This clash was particularly significant for Lincoln, who were competing against a squad valued at over £200 million, showcasing the vast gulf in resources.
Max Kilman, a recent £40 million signing from Wolves, lined up for the Hammers, a figure that dwarfs the total amount Lincoln has spent on players throughout their entire history. When asked about the disparity and the label of being an "underdog," Shaw expressed a desire to shake off that tag.
"The outside world may see us as underdogs, but we don’t want to feel that way anymore," he stated. "We aim to challenge these teams and take the game to them. We’ve had good performances and need to continue growing as a team and a club."
Lincoln's loss to West Ham marked their heaviest defeat of the season and extended their losing streak to three matches. Prior to this tough outing, they had secured back-to-back wins, lifting them to eighth in the league. Shaw defended his players, saying they would "never let us down" despite the red cards.
He lamented the missed opportunity for a competitive match, stating, "We could have had a good old ding-dong with them, but once those red cards came, it became incredibly tough."
