Gunners Prevail in North London Derby with Russo's Penalty Heroics
Arsenal broke free from their five-match winless spell in the Women's Super League, securing a 2-1 victory against rivals Tottenham in a pulsating north London derby. The Gunners had only managed one win in their first six league outings, beginning the day in eighth place and trailing Spurs by six points. Things started off on the wrong foot when Cathinka Tandberg's header put Tottenham ahead in the 13th minute, but Georgia Stanway quickly equalized just four minutes later with a fierce strike. Tottenham came out firing and exposed Arsenal's defensive vulnerabilities early on, but their momentum began to wane as the half wore on. After the break, Russo nearly found the net, only to be denied by a spectacular save from Lize Kop. The turning point came in the 56th minute when Russo converted a penalty after a handball by substitute Ella Morris during a chaotic scramble following a corner. While the decision felt harsh to some, Russo made no mistake this time, sending Kop the wrong way to put her team in the lead. Spurs pressed hard for an equalizer, and Shekiera Martinez thought she had scored in the 82nd minute, but her goal was ruled out for offside. In the end, Arsenal held firm to secure a much-needed win, providing some relief after a challenging start to the season.
