Aston Villa Stuns Man City: Defensive Woes Under the Microscope
Aston Villa put an end to Manchester City's flawless start to the Premier League season, claiming a 2-1 victory that highlighted some pressing defensive issues for Enzo Maresca's side. Nicolas Jackson was the star of the show, netting both goals for Villa, while City struggled to keep their first clean sheet in six matches. The performances of goalkeeper Gianluigi Donnarumma and defender Marc Guehi have come under scrutiny, as both players have been guilty of errors leading to goals. Since last season, only eight players in the Premier League have made more mistakes resulting in goals than Donnarumma and Guehi, with three each to their names. The last time City managed a shutout was during their solid win against Liverpool a fortnight ago, but they’ve since leaked goals against various opponents, including European champions Paris Saint-Germain and struggling Sunderland. Maresca experimented with different defensive lineups against Villa, but as Sir Alex Ferguson famously noted, “attack wins you games; defense wins you titles.” It's clear City must tighten up at the back if they aim to stay among the league's elite. In a post-match interview, Maresca admitted that the two goals conceded were preventable. "Absolutely, both. Sometimes you need a bit of luck; we only allowed those two opportunities, but we need to be more clinical and avoid mistakes like those," he said. Jackson's two goals ended City's seven-match winning streak to start the season. While the team began the campaign with a defensive headache, conceding eight goals in their first nine games, the situation has worsened, with nine goals allowed in just the last four matches. Donnarumma, who was signed to replace Ederson last summer, was expected to be a top-tier goalkeeper. While Ederson changed the game with his distribution, Donnarumma has struggled with his ball control and often puts his teammates in tough positions. City captain Ruben Dias was seen urging Donnarumma to send the ball forward after the keeper's poor handling of a pass. Meanwhile, former City keeper James Trafford, sold to Leeds for £45 million this summer, has been performing well, making more passes and having a better goal-prevention rate than Donnarumma this season. Although Donnarumma had little chance with Jackson’s opening strike, he should have done better with the second goal, which slipped under him. Former City defender Steph Houghton noted on BBC Radio 5 Live, "Donnarumma could have done a bit better with the second goal, but credit to Villa for their well-executed game plan." Guehi, who arrived from Crystal Palace for a £20 million fee, was seen as a smart acquisition. However, his inconsistent form has raised eyebrows, particularly after he made a crucial error late last season that cost City in the title race. His struggles continued against Villa, where he was caught out for the first goal and picked up a yellow card before being substituted at halftime. City has been looking to strengthen their defensive line, with sources indicating they considered signing a right-back over the summer. Abdukodir Khusanov was pressed into action but struggled before being moved to cover for Guehi, while Rico Lewis filled the void left by Guehi’s departure. The atmosphere at Villa Park was electric, with fans taunting City over their recent financial controversies. When asked if he was concerned about Guehi's performance, Maresca said, "No, I'm not worried about Marc. He has played every minute since the season started, and the change was partly due to him being on a yellow card." However, with Brighton, a team known for their attacking prowess, waiting in the wings for two encounters next week, Maresca needs to address these defensive lapses before they escalate into a more significant problem.
