Como's Dream Night: Facing Manchester United in the Champions League
Nestled by the serene banks of Lake Como, the Giuseppe Sinigaglia Stadium is set for a night to remember. "It’s Manchester United. We’re still wrapping our heads around playing against Inter, Milan, and Juventus," shared a Como staff member, capturing the essence of this momentous occasion. Although Manchester United is currently struggling, having gone six games without a win—their worst streak since the 2018-19 season—they still boast an unmatched global presence. For perspective, when United last celebrated a Champions League victory in 2008, Como was languishing in Serie D, competing in semi-professional leagues with minuscule crowds. Fast forward to today, and the club has transformed dramatically. Como’s chief executive, Mirwan Surwaso, revealed that their amateur status initially attracted the London-based media firm Sent Entertainment, backed by Indonesian tycoons Robert and Michael Hartono. The deal struck in 2019 was originally meant to spotlight young Indonesian talent, not to prepare for a match against a footballing giant like Manchester United. The picturesque stadium offers more than just football; it’s a gateway to the stunning Lake Como, with its yacht club and sea-plane facilities adding to the charm. Como has even capitalized on their surroundings by offering hour-long lake tours, complemented by pre-match hospitality. With a town population of just over 83,000, nearly every local could fill the San Siro, making the new club shop—once unnecessary during their Serie D days—a symbol of their growth. "Somehow the team got promoted, and we had to go professional, which changed everything," Surwaso explained on Piers Morgan's Football Uncensored Podcast. What was supposed to be a selling season for young talents has turned into a remarkable campaign with manager Cesc Fabregas leading the squad to fourth place in Serie B, thanks to a surprising defeat for AC Milan. In just five seasons since Fabregas joined as a player, Como has ascended to the Champions League stage. Recently, they received a nod of approval from none other than Lionel Messi's son, Ciro, who was spotted in a Como kit with his legendary father. Fabregas reflected on the transformation, stating, "When I ended my playing career here, it was like night and day. Now, we’re facing Manchester United, a historic moment for the club, the city, and our fans." His vision for Como is clear: build a family atmosphere where even losses are met with support from loyal fans. Yet, amid the excitement, questions loom. How will the club adhere to UEFA's financial regulations despite their rapid rise? Surwaso reassured fans, stating, "We are under scrutiny, but our finances are in good shape, so we're not overly concerned." However, a potential rainstorm could complicate matters, as much of the 12,300-capacity stadium lacks cover. For Como to truly maximize their potential, they must navigate their newfound status carefully. Fabregas emphasized the importance of focusing on the present rather than dwelling on past successes. "We began at a deficit, but we can't dwell on what’s behind us. We need to stay focused on what lies ahead," he said. As Como draws in thousands to their matches, the die-hard supporters from the lower leagues remain. Local fan Marco Melillo reminisced, "My uncle was a Como supporter. I fell in love with the colors and the stadium, and when I first saw the lake, it was breathtaking." Understanding the club's historical context, he noted, "We’re in the best position ever, and while we hope this journey continues, we know we’ll be here regardless of what happens next." Another local, Federico Borghi, braved the weather to show his unwavering support, embodying the spirit of Como's dedicated fanbase.
