Como's Dream Journey: Fabregas Prepares for United Showdown and Reflects on a Special Reunion
Como's ascent has been nothing short of phenomenal, and now the focus is on making this success sustainable. The club's journey from the depths of Italy's lower leagues to Serie A and now the Champions League is a tale of ambition and determination. It’s not just about the speed of their rise but also the desire to establish themselves firmly in Italian football. In a candid chat with Sky Sports News, Como's sporting director Carlalberto Ludi shared insights into the club's transformation, the pivotal role of head coach Cesc Fabregas, and the upcoming reunion with Manchester United captain Bruno Fernandes. Fabregas’s arrival in 2022 marked a turning point for Como. He joined as the club was still in Serie B and later transitioned to coaching after hanging up his boots. In just four years, he has propelled Como to Serie A for the first time in over two decades, and last season, they qualified for the Champions League, a historic feat for the club. Ludi emphasizes that Fabregas's impact is felt both on and off the pitch. "Cesc made a significant difference—not just in our play but in our entire club culture," he stated. "His professionalism and mindset have been key to our rapid growth. Thanks to him, we’ve become a strong competitive force ready for the Champions League." Fabregas’s influence was on full display during his recent press conference ahead of the match against Manchester United. He exuded a calm authority while fielding questions, showcasing the strong presence he commands at Como. Ludi is particularly impressed with Fabregas’s eagerness to learn and improve. "He’s young but incredibly open-minded. He’s always the first to seek ways to grow, and that’s one of his best traits," Ludi remarked. "Our team embodies the qualities of Cesc: courage, intelligence, and talent. We aim to reflect what he represented as a player." The reunion with Bruno Fernandes adds another layer of excitement to the match. Ludi and Fernandes share a similar journey, both having climbed through the ranks of Italian football. Ludi fondly remembers Fernandes as a 17-year-old at Novara, where he served as the young midfielder’s captain. "He was phenomenal even back then," Ludi recalled, smiling. "I had to guide him in understanding the professional game, but he was always humble and supportive. It’s been a joy to see him excel." Ludi expressed his anticipation for seeing Fernandes again, especially on such a grand stage. "Meeting him after the game would be wonderful, but facing him in the Champions League is a dream I never expected to come true. It's a fantastic opportunity." Como's journey has included key moments, like the draw against Cosenza in May 2024 that secured their Serie A promotion, laying the groundwork for their Champions League success. Hosting Manchester United is another monumental step in this incredible journey. The atmosphere around the club is electric as they prepare to welcome Michael Carrick's side. Ludi, who joined Como in 2019, reflected on the club's transformation. "It’s astounding to see how far we’ve come. When I started, there was a long road ahead, and now we have the Champions League and a match against United at home. It’s truly amazing." He added, "Sometimes we need to look back to appreciate what we've achieved. In football, there's always something to strive for, and we’re here to make history for Como. This is just another exciting chapter in our story." Ludi’s aspirations are clear: to make the fans proud and continue the fight for greatness.
