Celtic put on a masterclass at Celtic Park, demolishing Hearts 7-1 and solidifying their position at the top of the Scottish Premiership. This victory extends their lead to four points, while Hearts find themselves in third, trailing Rangers by another four points.
Looking for redemption after last season's dramatic title loss, Hearts were quickly reminded of the gulf in class. The Hoops showcased a 'devastating' display that left Hearts scrambling to find answers.
Celtic’s manager Martin O'Neill opted to field the same attacking trio that finished Thursday’s Europa League match against Benfica, and it paid off spectacularly. Benjamin Nygren, Callum Osmand, and Camilo Duran all found the net in this rout.
While Celtic dazzled, Hearts' display raised eyebrows. Kris Boyd remarked, "That first half was devastating. I cannot fathom what Hearts were trying to accomplish. Coming here and showing such disrespect to Celtic is a wake-up call."
He added, “Last year, Derek McInnes faced criticism for playing it safe, but at least they were competitive. What I saw today? There was nothing from Hearts that suggested they could match Celtic.”
Boyd continued, declaring, “That was annihilation. I’ve never witnessed anything like it.” Hearts had previously been solid defensively, conceding just eight goals in the league before this debacle.
Ryan McGowan, a former Hearts defender, echoed Boyd’s sentiments. "I couldn’t tell if Hearts were terrible or Celtic were exceptional. It was probably a mix of both. Too many times, Hearts gifted the ball to Celtic, and within two passes, they were punished."
He pointed out that while Hearts aimed for a title challenge this season, they seemed to lack understanding of the game’s dynamics. At 5-1 down by halftime, any tactical adjustments from the manager were lost, as they conceded again just minutes into the second half.
Despite the one-sided scoreline, O'Neill wasn’t ready to write off Hearts as title contenders just yet. "They’re still formidable challengers, even after this match," he said. "Everything clicked for us, and once we got ahead, our confidence soared."
Celtic is set to host Benfica again on Thursday, while Hearts prepare for a trip to Trabzonspor in the Conference League. Vrancken, the Hearts head coach, acknowledged the need for improvement, stating, "We need to analyze our mistakes and regain our confidence. Today was not good enough, especially with the individual errors and set pieces that cost us early on."
