Arsenal's Depth Shines in Another Dull Victory

Arsenal’s latest win against Nottingham Forest wasn’t exactly a thrilling affair, but it highlighted the team's depth over creativity. With their bench playing a crucial role, the Gunners secured their second consecutive victory since the international break without leading at half-time in either match.
After a tough defeat at Brighton and a lackluster performance against Leeds, there was a sense that Arsenal needed to reestablish their quality. While this match didn’t exactly strike fear into opponents, it underscored the team’s consistency and the strength of their squad, which has become one of their most significant assets.
For stretches of the game, Arsenal looked flat. In the first half, their passing was slow and too cautious, which prevented stars like Bukayo Saka and Eberechi Eze from effectively challenging the Forest full-backs. The Gunners seemed more focused on waiting for Forest to slip up rather than creating chances with bold attacking moves.
The breakthrough finally came from Noni Madueke, who capitalized on a run at Daniel Múñoz, scoring Arsenal’s only shot on target after a significant deflection. It was a goal that encapsulated the game—effective yet not visually striking.
Arsenal’s coaching staff has enlisted Germán Castaños, a creativity coach, to help the players think outside the box. His unconventional methods aim to foster innovation, but it raises the question of how a team that seems so unremarkable can still find success.
Mikel Arteta believes in these team-building exercises, which might seem gimmicky to outsiders. But one can only imagine how much more tedious Arsenal would be without this constant push for creativity and inspiration.
Castaños has introduced unique training scenarios, like pitting a boxer against two opponents or creating mismatches in team drills. You have to wonder how they would prepare for a tight defensive unit like Oliver Glasner's side. For much of this match, Arsenal appeared to be treading water, with only fleeting moments of unpredictability, primarily from Saka on the right flank.
Saka, now 25, faces the challenge of living up to the immense potential he showed as a teenager. Despite scoring three league goals this season, he seems to be battling the burden of expectation, as consistent performances can sometimes lead to a sense of stagnation.
There was one brilliant early play where he drew a yellow card from Neco Williams, yet the overall approach remained conservative. Saka’s contributions were more effective than Eze’s on the opposite side, leading to Eze’s substitution at halftime in favor of Madueke, who offered a bit more width and threat as Forest started to push forward.
For a long time, Arsenal’s lack of attacking vigor seemed to invite Forest into the game, creating the illusion that they could snatch a point. Leeds might feel similarly after their recent encounter. However, the game shifted in Arsenal’s favor after a triple substitution midway through the second half.
The introduction of Jurriën Timber, Mikel Merino, and Viktor Gyökeres brought fresh energy and purpose that Forest struggled to match. As Forest attempted to equalize, Arsenal took control, dominating possession in their half. While the match wasn’t a thrilling spectacle, it showcased Arsenal’s strength in depth. There will be time for flair later.
