Arteta Justifies Job Cuts at Arsenal as Necessary for Future Success
Mikel Arteta has come to the forefront to defend Arsenal's tough decision to eliminate up to 60 positions, stating that this move is crucial for the club's future success. The Premier League champions have begun informing some staff members about the potential job losses following a cost-cutting review initiated by the Boston Consulting Group (BCG) before last season wrapped up. Arsenal aims to minimize redundancies and plans to redeploy affected employees where possible, though some layoffs seem inevitable. Departments such as catering and travel are reportedly facing cuts, while the coaching and performance staff for both the men’s and women’s teams will remain untouched. Other sectors, including the academy and community initiatives, are also safe, but various football operations are under scrutiny as part of the internal review led by managing director Richard Garlick. The timing of these cuts has raised eyebrows, especially after Arteta recently signed a new deal reportedly worth over £20 million a year. The club insists that the restructuring process began prior to the announcement of this contract. Arteta, however, has distanced himself from addressing the layoffs directly. “It was explained to me about the exercise, and the analysis that has been done across the club, with the intention always to evolve to improve,” he remarked. “Some decisions have to be taken, to put people in the right roles, and keep investing to achieve what we want.” He emphasized that he isn’t the right person to discuss the redundancies and hopes for understanding on that front. The subject was quickly dropped as Arteta moved on to other matters. Arsenal's latest financial reports indicate a jump in operating costs from £148 million to £201 million, prompting owner Kroenke Sports & Entertainment to seek cost reductions even after clinching the Premier League title. This summer, Arteta played a vital role in revamping Arsenal’s medical team, bringing in former Aston Villa doctor Arnaldo Abrantes and enhancing his support staff in various capacities. As Arsenal prepares for their upcoming match against Nottingham Forest, they will be focusing on their game strategy—Kai Havertz is expected to start, with Viktor Gyökeres on the bench. The Swedish striker has yet to score this season and struggled against Lille after a strong international break. “These are moments in a player’s career, or in a season,” Arteta noted. “We are doing everything we can to support him. He had some good chances recently, but strikers live on fine margins. Scoring or not scoring can dramatically change the narrative.”
