Lewis Koumas has etched his name in Liverpool's history, becoming the youngest player to both score and provide an assist in a Champions League match for the club.
The first to congratulate him in front of the traveling fans in Linz was none other than Bradley Barcola, who netted a hat-trick himself. Just a year ago, Koumas was on loan at Birmingham in the Championship, while Barcola was helping Paris Saint-Germain clinch their second consecutive Champions League title.
Fast forward to this week, and both players found themselves on the pitch together in a sensational 6-3 victory over LASK. Although Koumas had two goals disallowed for offside, his persistence paid off when he finally found the net, marking a remarkable milestone for the 21-year-old Welsh international.
With this achievement, Koumas surpassed the previous record set by Liverpool legend Steven Gerrard in 2001. When informed of the comparison, Koumas was taken aback, asking, "Is that official?" He added, "It's not a bad stat, is it? And it's not a bad name to be alongside. Wow. What a legend. I just want more of this."
Despite the excitement, Koumas remains grounded, emphasizing the importance of his role: "This is my job. I need to get goals and assists. I hadn't had any before Linz, so it was crucial to get them."
In a squad filled with high-profile players, Koumas stands out as a feel-good story. He joined Liverpool at just 11 years old and made his first-team debut at 18 under Jurgen Klopp. After loan spells at Stoke, Birmingham, and Hull, where he played a vital role in their promotion last season, new manager Andoni Iraola recognized Koumas as part of his plans from the get-go.
Koumas made his Premier League debut against Newcastle and then appeared as a substitute in the Champions League against Atletico Madrid. His first start of the season came against Tottenham in the Carabao Cup, where his dynamic performance earned him the man of the match accolade. Post-game, he couldn't wait to share the moment with his family over a video call.
"It was probably the best feeling in my career, 100%. I'm just really grateful to have the opportunity again," Koumas expressed. "I would not have been a happy man if I didn't score; I would have been gutted. I just kept going because I knew the more the game went on, the more it was opening up."
The connection with Liverpool's fans is something Koumas treasures: "Going over to the fans at the end meant absolutely everything. They are the reason we do this and why we want this job. I wish I could have gotten in there with them, but there was a big metal cage in the way!"
It's been an eventful week for Koumas, son of former Wales midfielder Jason Koumas. He started two games in a row for Liverpool, and just days ago, he almost netted his first Premier League goal against Manchester City. After a sweet strike was denied by Gianluigi Donnarumma, he admitted, "I was absolutely gutted. I couldn't really sleep that night, just thinking about the chance. I feel like I couldn't have hit it any better."
Koumas knows the competition is fierce, especially with big names like Isak and Gakpo on the verge of returning. "You never know when your last game is going to be," he said. "I know that sounds like a cliché, but it is true. I've got to keep pushing and make the most of every chance I get."
As Liverpool prepares to face Brentford this Saturday, Koumas may very well lead the line for the third consecutive match. Coach Iraola mentioned it's still too early to confirm whether Isak or Gakpo will be available, but the fact that Koumas could start again speaks volumes about his impact.
Rob Page, Liverpool's academy boss, commented on Koumas’s energy and how it inspires others, highlighting the potential for more young talents to break into the first team. "We have a manager who has an identity about how he wants to play, which suits a lot of the players. They’ve seen a pathway there now," he noted.
Koumas is brimming with confidence, stating, "We are getting chances, but ultimately, it’s because we are good enough. Trey and Rio are unbelievable, and if you're good enough, it doesn’t matter how old you are."
For the academy graduates like Koumas, first-team action could soon become the norm. "Hopefully that is the case, and that’s how I would love it to go. But I just have to keep working hard, keep my head down, and do what the gaffer asks of me to make it last as long as we can."
Right now, Koumas is all in, ready to seize every opportunity that comes his way.
