Mikel Arteta didn't hide his apprehension regarding the quad injury that forced Bukayo Saka off the pitch just ten minutes into Arsenal's thrilling 2-2 draw with Bayern Munich. His words were clear: it didn’t look promising at all.
Arsenal had the momentum early on, with Declan Rice netting a crucial equalizer in the 82nd minute. They initially took the lead thanks to Eberechi Eze, who stepped in after Saka's departure, but it was Harry Kane who stole the spotlight, assisting Alphonso Davies for the equalizer before scoring from the penalty spot to give Bayern the lead.
Saka’s departure cast a shadow over Arsenal’s performance. After a seemingly routine challenge with Davies, he fell to the ground and left the pitch slowly, a clear sign of distress. Even as he exited the stadium, it was evident he was still in discomfort.
“It doesn’t look good at all, but we have to wait and see,” Arteta said, revealing that the medical team was concerned. “When a player has to come off due to sharp pain, it’s never a positive sign. Bukayo missed the start against Lille but played against Nottingham Forest, and then this injury struck early in the match. The intensity of this game is incredible.”
Arteta drew parallels to the intense PSG-Barcelona clash from earlier, emphasizing the physical demands players face. “It’s man-to-man for 96 minutes, there’s no room to breathe. The stress and quality required are at an unbelievable level. And unfortunately, injuries happen.”
Despite the draw, the manager expressed disappointment. “We accept it, but we’re not satisfied as we aimed for a win,” he commented. “From the outset, you could see the team’s mindset, their intention to dominate and cause problems for Bayern. We pressed them and attacked well. We were the better side in the first 25 minutes and took the lead, but losing Bukayo was a major blow.”
He praised his team’s resilience, noting their spirit to continue attacking. “The substitutes came on and made an impact. After scoring the equalizer, the team’s reaction was fantastic. We wanted to push forward and seize the win.”
