Carragher Slams Fernandes for Tactics Critique After United's Setback
Bruno Fernandes has found himself in hot water after criticizing Manchester United's tactics in their disappointing 4-1 defeat to Como. Jamie Carragher didn’t hold back, defending Michael Carrick and expressing concern that Carrick's time at Old Trafford could soon come to a close. After the match, Fernandes questioned the decision not to employ a man-to-man pressing strategy. Carrick, however, was quick to respond, stating in his press conference, "if you don't run back, you ain't going to win." This outburst from Fernandes follows a similar situation just days earlier when Lisandro Martinez publicly criticized the club's management after a 2-0 loss to Atletico Madrid. Carragher had also rebuked Martinez for his comments and extended that sentiment to Fernandes. "We said that Lisandro Martinez was out of line for his remarks about the hierarchy," Carragher stated on CBS Sports. "For Bruno to say this is unacceptable. He was Player of the Year last season because of Carrick's guidance. Without Carrick's influence, he wouldn’t have received that accolade." Carragher continued to emphasize that Fernandes' attitude was all wrong. "He reacted poorly after being subbed off, and it’s clear he’s embarrassed by the manager’s decision. When it comes to pressing, Bruno has often been a liability for Man Utd. He runs around aimlessly, making it look like he’s working hard, but it actually harms the team." Reflecting on Manchester United’s history, Carragher drew a contrast between Fernandes and former captain Brian Robson, one of the club's all-time greats. "Robson never threw his teammates or managers under the bus. He fought for the team. Watching Bruno throw his arms up in frustration each week is disappointing, especially given his own performances this season. He’s not acting like a true Manchester United captain." Carragher pointed out that every manager Fernandes has played under seems to struggle with establishing an identity for the team. "Cesc Fabregas is a promising coach, but the rot in this club runs deep. This situation cannot continue at a club of United's stature. I’m glad Carrick stood up to Fernandes and called out the lack of effort from the players." While Carragher appreciated Carrick’s response, he lamented the potential implications for the manager's future. "It’s a sad state of affairs, but it's hard to believe many expected United to win this match. The manner of the defeat is what’s truly shocking. If performances like this continue, Carrick's position could be in jeopardy. He’s done well in the past, but it seems like yet another Manchester United manager is on the brink." Sky Sports News' Danyal Khan echoed Carragher's sentiments, noting Carrick’s dejected demeanor as he acknowledged the away fans post-match. "He seemed to ignore most players, focusing instead on apologizing to the supporters who made the trip. It’s reminiscent of Ole Gunnar Solskjaer’s time when the team faced a similar fate against Watford, leading to his sacking." Khan further highlighted Carrick's attempts to defend his side despite the mounting criticism. "In the face of all the scrutiny regarding running and intensity, he couldn’t defend them this time. Fernandes’ questioning of tactics and Carrick’s strong rebuttal was a significant moment, especially as he held the line instead of turning on his players. It was quite a contrast to the atmosphere surrounding the team."
