Zigiotti's Magic Lifts Man Utd Over Liverpool in Thrilling WSL Clash

Manchester United Women hosted Liverpool Women in a gripping Barclays Women's Super League matchup on Saturday, October 3, 2026, at Leigh Sports Village, where Julia Zigiotti's early brilliance led to a 1-0 triumph for the home side. Zigiotti's decisive chip came just six minutes into the game, taking advantage of a wayward clearance from Liverpool's Khiara Keating. "We wanted to start the game quickly and hope they were not prepared, and that's what happened today," she remarked after the match, reflecting the team's intent from the get-go. This victory marks back-to-back wins for United, a welcome turnaround for manager Eva Olid, who had faced a rocky start to her tenure. After suffering defeats in her first two outings and a heavy 5-0 loss to Chelsea, Olid has now secured seven points from her last three matches, breathing new life into the squad. While United's early goal put them ahead, they could have stretched their lead further. Five minutes before halftime, Jess Park made a dazzling run from deep inside her half, unleashing a powerful shot that struck the crossbar and bounced away, leaving fans on the edge of their seats. Liverpool, however, was not to be underestimated. They showcased their own attacking flair, nearly leveling the score when Beata Olsson hit the post with a well-placed shot. Olsson had another golden opportunity moments later when a rebound from Cornelia Kapocs fell to her, but her lackluster finish allowed United's Phallon Tullis-Joyce to execute a remarkable double save. As the match wore on, both teams continued to push for goals. United's Jenna Clark came close with a header that just evaded the target, and Terland forced another save from Keating with a curling effort that was ultimately too close to trouble the keeper. Despite Liverpool's relentless pursuit, Zigiotti's early strike proved to be the match-winner. This result not only boosted United's confidence but also placed them level on points with their visitors as the teams head into the international break. Stay tuned for more updates!
