In a captivating interview, Chelsea's head coach Xabi Alonso joined former teammate Jamie Carragher for a deep dive into his new role at Stamford Bridge and what he aims to achieve this season. The two shared insights about their playing days at Liverpool and the challenges ahead for Alonso.
Alonso explained that timing was crucial for him when he decided to take charge at Chelsea. "After my time at Leverkusen and Madrid, I needed a fresh start and felt a strong connection to the potential here," he said. He emphasized that while he had no prior ties to Chelsea, he believed the foundation was solid enough for a promising journey.
"There’s a strong base in the squad, and with some strategic updates and new signings, we can build a formidable team. It’s going to be a process, and while we know it won't be instant success, this first year is vital," Alonso shared.
He acknowledged that joining Chelsea meant getting to know the club’s dynamics from the inside. "It’s one thing to read about the team from afar, but it's another to understand the people, their perspectives, and the club's aspirations," he stated. Having a solid line of communication with the ownership and sporting director is key for him, as he values being part of the decision-making process.
Alonso is confident that the club is on the right path, stating, "Seven games in, and we have a clear vision of what we want. I’m not worried about results just yet; it’s crucial we feel we’re heading in the right direction."
Looking ahead, he acknowledged that success is a long-term goal. "We have ambitions to return to the top, and while we know it takes time and wise decisions, being involved in those decisions is as important as anything else," he remarked.
Reflecting on his experiences in Germany compared to his current role in England, Alonso noted the daily collaboration with his sporting director in Germany was different. "In England, the relationship is more about discussing player momentum and overall team dynamics, which has been fruitful at Chelsea," he explained.
Carragher and Alonso reminisced about their time at Liverpool, where both were deeply passionate about football. Alonso recalled how he quickly learned the importance of earning respect in the squad, especially from seasoned players like Steven Gerrard and Jamie Carragher.
"I remember my debut against Bolton; the physicality was a wake-up call, but after a few good performances, I started to gain respect from my teammates," he said.
He highlighted that the gap between top clubs and the rest has narrowed in recent years, with players becoming more complete and well-prepared. "The tactical sophistication is on another level now, and I’m still adjusting to the pace of the Premier League," Alonso admitted.
Despite changes in the game, he noted that the electric atmosphere in stadiums remains unchanged. "The energy during matches, especially against teams like Everton, feels just like it did years ago. My first match in the Premier League against Fulham was a reminder of that unique atmosphere," he said.
Alonso concluded by emphasizing the need for preparation against all teams, as the game has evolved. "You can’t underestimate any opposition anymore; it’s about being ready for everything," he stated.
