WSL Insights: Arsenal's Woes, Brighton's Bright Future, and Surprising Stats
The Women's Super League is starting to take form for the 2026-27 season, and while Manchester City sits comfortably in first with five wins from five, the narratives surrounding other teams are far more captivating. Arsenal's title ambitions appear to be fading, while Brighton, currently ninth, is impressively ranked third in expected points. Before the season kicked off, Opta had Arsenal as the third favorites to claim the title. Their initial win against Brighton and Chelsea's draw against Aston Villa in the opening week gave them a brief glimmer of hope. However, the following four games, which yielded just two points, have severely dented their championship aspirations. Arsenal's ongoing struggles seem to stem from a familiar issue. Last season, they were plagued by draws in matches they statistically should have won based on expected goals, and that trend has resurfaced. With positive xG margins of 2.2 and 1.2 in their home fixtures against Crystal Palace (0-0) and Manchester United (1-1), respectively, it's clear they are creating chances but failing to convert. If not for Smilla Holmberg's last-minute strike against United, Arsenal's situation could be even bleaker. Their finishing struggles are collective; only Lisa Baum and Alessia Russo have found the net, with Russo trailing her expected goals tally by 1.28. A recent scoring spree during the international break may just revive her confidence. Adding to their woes is a potential physical shortfall. Gradient Sports ranks players based on athleticism, and among the 125 WSL players who have clocked at least 270 minutes this season, Arsenal’s Steph Catley is their highest-rated at 31st. In contrast, every other club boasts multiple players in the top 50, with Chelsea leading the pack with five. While physicality isn't the sole determinant of success, it raises questions for Arsenal fans about the team's intensity. Brighton, initially pegged by Opta to finish seventh, are currently in ninth, which aligns with predictions. However, their underlying metrics suggest they should be sitting much higher—just a whisker behind City in expected points. Their 1-1 draw with Aston Villa highlighted their struggles, as they dominated the match with an expected goal count of 3.17 to 0.03, yet still dropped points. The Seagulls also failed to capitalize on their expected goals against Birmingham, leading by 1.5 and missing several crucial chances in their 2-0 loss to London City Lionesses. If they can convert their dominance into results, Brighton could certainly replicate their fifth-place finish from the 2024-25 season. Effective pressing is usually a hallmark of successful teams, and Opta’s high turnover metric shows which squads thrive in regaining possession near the opponent's goal. The bottom five teams in last season's standings had the fewest high turnovers leading to shots. However, the current season reveals some surprises with promoted teams, as Palace ranks third for shot-ending high turnovers with 12, just behind Chelsea and Tottenham. Palace's efficiency is evident, as they lead the league with 33.3% of their possession recoveries in the final 40 meters leading to shots. Their newly promoted counterparts, Birmingham, follow closely with 28.6%. Both teams are shaking up expectations, with Birmingham tied with Tottenham for the most goals from high turnovers at three, all scored by Océane Hurtré, who now shares the top spot in the golden boot race with five goals. The 22-year-old French forward was instrumental in two of Birmingham’s high-turnover goals, including one against Manchester City, showcasing the advantages of early pressing in matches.
