In a thrilling turn of events, Brighton's Pascal Struijk has seen his red card from the match against Sunderland, handed out by referee Thomas Bramall, overturned after a VAR review.
The incident occurred in the 57th minute of Saturday's game at the Stadium of Light. Struijk was initially not penalized for what appeared to be a routine challenge on Sunderland's Wilson Isidor. However, VAR Neil Davies stepped in, prompting Bramall to review the footage.
After multiple looks at the replay, Bramall decided to show Struijk a straight red card for allegedly denying a clear goalscoring opportunity, a decision that left Brighton’s players and fans in disbelief.
Fortunately for Struijk, following a successful appeal against the dismissal, he will avoid a one-match suspension. This means he is set to be available for Brighton’s next Premier League encounter against Crystal Palace this weekend.
Having joined Brighton from Leeds in a £20 million deal over the summer, this was only Struijk's second start in the top flight for his new club. Despite the controversy surrounding his dismissal, Brighton managed to secure a 2-0 victory over Sunderland, maintaining their impressive start to the season.
Currently sitting third in the league, the Seagulls trail leaders Manchester City by five points, showcasing their strong form as they look to build on their success.
