Tottenham's Troubling Start: Experts Weigh In on Spurs' Struggles
In a recent special podcast from Sky Sports, Tim Sherwood and Tottenham reporter Michael Bridge took a deep dive into Spurs' troubling start to the Premier League season. Currently sitting at the bottom of the table, Tottenham is yet to secure a win and face Manchester United this Saturday, a game that could be pivotal for the club's morale. When Aston Villa took the lead in their last matchup, it seemed all but certain that Spurs would enter the international break without a win. It’s been nearly two years since they managed to turn around a match after going behind, with last month's 3-2 defeat marking the 47th match in this troubling streak. "It's definitely concerning, especially at home where you need strong characters to step up," Sherwood expressed during the podcast. "Right now, Spurs lack those leaders. There’s no one really rallying the troops to change this poor trend of not coming back from losing positions." While the manager is passionate, Sherwood feels the players need to show more fight on the pitch. "You need that spark in training and in the locker room every day, and I’m just not seeing the right characters at the moment," he added. Bridge echoed these sentiments. With Spurs collecting the fewest points of any Premier League team this season, he questioned the leadership on the team. He noted the peculiar choice of captains by manager Roberto De Zerbi, highlighting that Archie Gray, who is unlikely to feature regularly, was named among the five. "How many players are truly ready to take charge and motivate each other? Cristian Romero shows aggression, but we need more from the squad to really push each other," Bridge stated. The lack of wins has raised eyebrows about Spurs' heavy summer spending, which exceeded £330 million. Sherwood was blunt when asked if any of the ten new signings have impressed him so far. "No, not a single one. They’ve underperformed compared to last season’s squad. It’s hard to find any standout players when the team is losing consistently," he declared. Sherwood's concerns extend beyond just this season, as he reflected on the club's transfer history. "Tottenham hasn't made a quality signing in years, and while it’s still early for this group, they need to show their potential soon," he noted. Bridge pointed to Omar Marmoush as a player to watch, having yet to find the net in his first five appearances despite showing promise at Manchester City and Eintracht Frankfurt. "He’s a talent, but can he deliver consistently for Spurs? That’s the big question," Bridge remarked. With Dominic Solanke out of form and Richarlison struggling, Spurs' need for a reliable striker is becoming increasingly urgent. "They require a traditional number nine, but those players are hard to come by," Bridge said. He also expressed concerns over goalkeeper Antonin Kinsky's long-term fit at the club. "If you've splashed that much cash and still need a striker and a keeper, there's work to be done." As Spurs gear up for their match against Manchester United, the pressure is on to secure that elusive first league win. Should the winless streak extend, the heat will surely intensify on De Zerbi.
