Tottenham Hotspur has finally found their rhythm, pulling themselves off the bottom of the Premier League table with a hard-fought 3-1 victory over Coventry City. It's been a long wait for the Spurs fans, who can now celebrate their first win of the season, even if it wasn’t as polished as they would have liked.
The game was marred by controversy, particularly surrounding the second goal for Spurs. After Coventry had equalized through Jack Rudoni, Omar Marmoush put the home side back in front with a fierce strike in the 59th minute. While Marmoush celebrated his first goal on loan from Manchester City, there were questions about whether he should have been penalized for an apparent elbow on Milan van Ewijk just before the goal.
Frank Lampard looked on in disbelief as Spurs finally tasted victory. James Maddison, returning to the starting lineup after 536 days, opened the scoring with a fantastic long-range effort. Ben Davies, who came on as a sub, sealed the deal with a third goal in added time, much to the delight of the home crowd. Fans were also thrilled to see Dejan Kulusevski make his long-awaited return after more than a year sidelined with injury.
Kulusevski’s presence on the bench was a beacon of hope for Spurs, who have missed his creative spark. After a resilient draw against Manchester United last time out, this match was a chance to build momentum. However, early jitters were evident as De Zerbi’s tactical switch to a back three seemed to unsettle the team initially.
Coventry had the first real chance of the match, with Tatsuhiro Sakamoto's deflected shot testing Spurs' defense early on. But it was soon Spurs who struck first. Mohammed Kudus, lively on the right flank, set up Maddison, who calmly curled a right-footed shot into the net, silencing the visitors' fans who had booed him throughout the match.
Maddison’s goal was a personal triumph, marking his first since a Europa League semi-final in May 2025. His energy was infectious, even prompting a rare smile from Lampard when Maddison sprinted back to thwart a Coventry counterattack, albeit with a heavy clearance that hit the opposition bench.
Coventry took their time to respond but began to find their footing as the first half progressed. Spurs showed flashes of attacking promise, but there was always an air of uncertainty. A slick exchange from Coventry served as a warning to Spurs, with Micky van de Ven making a key intervention to prevent further damage.
The start of the second half saw Spurs sluggish, and it wasn’t long before Coventry capitalized on their hesitance. A quick counter led to Rudoni scoring the equalizer, leaving Spurs momentarily stunned.
However, Spurs quickly regained their composure. Despite the controversy surrounding Marmoush’s second goal, which was allowed to stand despite the apparent foul, his strike from 20 yards was a beauty. The away fans were incensed when the goal replayed on the big screen, but it only fired up Coventry to push for another equalizer.
Spurs held firm under pressure, with De Zerbi making changes to inject fresh energy into the side. Training in Marbella last week seemed to pay off as they moved up the table, pushing Coventry into the relegation zone. With this win, Spurs will hope to keep the positive momentum going as they look ahead to the rest of the season.
