Harry Kane has officially made his mark at Bayern Munich, now sitting as their seventh-highest scorer while still holding the record for Tottenham. Interestingly, the legendary Jimmy Greaves, who Kane surpassed, also ranks as Chelsea's seventh-highest scorer. This leads us to a fascinating question: Are there other players who feature in the all-time top 10 scoring lists for multiple clubs?
A deep dive into football history reveals that while many players are top scorers for two clubs, the quest to find those in multiple top 10s is intriguing. For instance, Sergio Agüero boasts an impressive record with Atlético Madrid and Manchester City. Similarly, icons like Kenny Dalglish (Celtic and Liverpool), Lionel Messi (Barcelona and Inter Miami), and Cristiano Ronaldo (Real Madrid and Al-Nassr) show up on these coveted lists.
One standout is Harry Johnson, who is the all-time leading scorer for both Sheffield United and Mansfield. According to Darren White, Johnson netted an impressive 201 league goals for the Blades from 1919 to 1931 before moving on to Mansfield, where he added another 104 goals. His unique record may well be unparalleled for any player with multiple clubs.
When it comes to players appearing on the top 10 for three clubs, we have Romário (Vasco da Gama, Flamengo, and PSV) and Delio Onnis (Monaco, Tours FC, and Gimnasia). Rhys Shakeshaft also points out Robbie Keane, who counts Tottenham, LA Galaxy, and ATK among his top-scoring clubs, alongside André-Pierre Gignac with Marseille, Toulouse, and Tigres UANL. John Aldridge, known for his time at Newport County, Oxford United, and Tranmere Rovers, also deserves a mention, as he’s the fourth-highest scorer for the Republic of Ireland.
Samuel Eto’o, a legend of the game, potentially features in the top 10 for four clubs: Mallorca, Barcelona, Anzhi Makhachkala, and Antalyaspor. Rhys Shakeshaft notes some uncertainty about the Antalyaspor stats but is confident in the other three.
While accurate historical data can be elusive, it seems that Sam Kerr may be among the top scorers for five different teams: Perth Glory FC, Western New York Flash, Gotham FC, Chicago Red Stars, and Chelsea. Yet, even that record pales in comparison to one remarkable player.
As Ben highlights, Morocco's Abderrazak Hamdallah impressively ranks in the top 10 for six clubs. He's the all-time top scorer for OC Safi, second for El-Jaish, and fourth for Guangzhou R&F, Al-Nassr, Al-Ittihad, and Al-Shabab. At 35, he just joined Al-Taawoun, leaving the door open for further additions to his impressive tally.
In other news, the German national team will part ways with Adidas after a remarkable 70-year partnership, transitioning to Nike. Paul Savage raises a great question: Is this the longest kit supply relationship in history?
Dirk Maas dug up some interesting facts about longstanding club sponsorships. Bayern Munich has had Adidas as its kit sponsor since 1965, though the iconic trefoil first appeared on their shirts in 1973. HJK from Finland also started a relationship with Adidas in 1965, which continues today. However, nothing beats the historical partnership between Germany and Adidas.
Last week, we explored players with more own goals than actual goals. Notably, Des Walker, a defensive stalwart for Nottingham Forest and England, had a single goal in over 800 appearances but at least seven own goals. His career total stands at -6 goals, a peculiar mark for one of England’s defensive greats.
Lastly, a Finnish Football Show tweet from 2017 asked about consecutive goalless draws, prompting thoughts of George Graham’s Arsenal side, who managed four straight 0-0s in October 1993. Interestingly, Arsène Wenger's Arsenal also pulled off a similar feat in the league, showing that sometimes offense takes a back seat in the beautiful game.
