Sarina Wiegman Extends Tenure as England Women's Manager Through 2029
Sarina Wiegman is set to continue her journey with the England women's team after signing a two-year contract extension. Having taken charge over five years ago, the 56-year-old Dutch manager's new deal will keep her at the helm until Euro 2029, extending her tenure beyond the upcoming World Cup. Wiegman led the Lionesses to their second consecutive European Championship title, triumphing over Spain in the Euro 2025 final. This achievement marked a historic moment, making England the first team from the nation—men’s or women’s—to secure a major trophy on foreign soil. "I am so happy to be able to carry on with this squad and cannot think of a better job in football," Wiegman expressed. She continued, "Working for a world-class organization like The FA and alongside so many dedicated people in the sport excites me every day." Recently, the Lionesses dominated Greece, winning 8-1 on aggregate to advance to the second round of the World Cup play-offs, where they will take on Ukraine. A successful outcome will see them qualify for the prestigious tournament in Brazil next summer. "My main concern right now is absolutely the World Cup, and helping this squad realize their potential in the years to come," Wiegman stated. She added, "We have an important job to do to confirm our place in Brazil, and hopefully, we can give the country another special summer to remember next year." Wiegman stepped into the England manager role in September 2021, taking over from Phil Neville. Her leadership brought the Lionesses their first major trophy at Euro 2022, where they defeated Germany 2-1 at Wembley. In 2023, she guided the team to the World Cup final in Australia, though they fell short against Spain, losing 1-0. Reaching the Euro 2025 final made Wiegman the first manager—male or female—to lead teams to five consecutive major international finals, previously achieving success with the Netherlands. Her Euro 2025 victory also made her just the second manager ever to win three straight European Championships, following in the footsteps of Germany’s Christina Theune. FA chief Mark Bullingham praised Wiegman as an "incredible coach with an unparalleled record in major tournaments." "While we will all remember the trophies and thrilling moments she has given us, I know she is only looking forward," he remarked. "There is no one better to lead the Lionesses into the next two tournaments." The FA and fans will surely welcome this news, as many anticipated Wiegman might seek new challenges following the 2027 World Cup. Instead, her extension highlights her strong relationship with the FA and commitment to her team. This timely announcement allows both Wiegman and her players to concentrate fully on World Cup qualification, free from the concern of succession plans. Widely regarded as one of football's greatest coaches, Wiegman has already accomplished remarkable feats. Yet, this contract extension signifies her relentless pursuit of success as she aims for that coveted World Cup title.
