Bukayo Saka was forced off just 10 minutes into the match, stricken by a quad injury during Arsenal's 2-2 Champions League draw with Bayern Munich.
Mikel Arteta conveyed his concerns, stating, "It does not look good at all" regarding Saka's injury, which he sustained while attempting a pass with no one around him. Eberechi Eze came on to replace Saka and made an immediate impact by scoring the opening goal.
Arteta noted the team's worries, emphasizing that it’s never a good sign when a player departs the field due to sharp pain. "We have to wait and see," he added, highlighting the uncertainty surrounding Saka's condition.
The 25-year-old has struggled with injuries lately, having previously managed his fitness at the end of last season and during the World Cup due to an Achilles issue. He missed the March international break and seven games for Arsenal but returned in time to help the Gunners clinch their first Premier League title in 22 years.
Saka's involvement in the Champions League final against PSG was cut short when he was substituted after 54 minutes. Moreover, he only started three out of England's eight games in the World Cup, although he shined with a hat-trick in the third-place match against France.
Last season, Saka underwent surgery for a hamstring injury that sidelined him for over three months. Despite the challenges, he managed to contribute in 49 matches as Arsenal secured the title, although he faced multiple setbacks, including a hip injury that forced him out just before a match against Leeds.
His absence is a blow for the Gunners, who have shown improved win percentages with him on the pitch.
Even with Saka's departure so early, Arsenal held their ground and nearly clinched a victory after Declan Rice equalized late in the game. Champions League pundit Nedum Onuoha remarked on the disappointment of losing such an impactful player early on, pointing out that Saka realized he was in trouble as he lay on the ground.
Onuoha acknowledged that while Saka's absence is significant, Arsenal has the depth to cope. Following Saka's injury, Noni Madueke switched wings and looked promising, while Eze continued to shine on the left.
"This illustrates the strength of their squad," Onuoha noted, praising Madueke and Eze for stepping up.
Despite criticism of Arsenal's playing style this season, they managed to control possession against Bayern, and losing Saka, who has netted four goals in 11 appearances, will undoubtedly be challenging.
However, Arsenal has bolstered their squad over the last couple of summers, providing them with various options. Madueke is versatile enough to play on either flank, and summer signing Christos Tzolis, despite currently nursing a hamstring injury, had begun the season well.
The Gunners also have 16-year-old Max Dowman, who has already proven his worth by scoring in the Premier League last season.
Arteta, reflecting on the team’s performance in Saka's absence, expressed satisfaction with Eze's contribution. "His overall performance, including his commitment off the ball, was impressive," Arteta said.
He further praised the squad’s energy and adaptability, suggesting they are well-equipped to handle the challenges ahead.
