Ronaldo's Punishment Trimmed After Initial Outcry
Cristiano Ronaldo has navigated the choppy waters of disciplinary action after he walked out on a Portugal training camp. Initially, he demanded a punishment that would be imposed "without mitigating circumstances," but he later campaigned to have that very penalty reduced. After leaving the camp in Denmark last month, Ronaldo took to social media, stating that he should face whatever sanction the Portuguese Football Federation (FPF) deemed appropriate. He even acknowledged that, as captain, his position could be seen as an aggravating factor. However, during the inquiry, the 41-year-old presented several compelling arguments to lessen his punishment. He pointed to his clean disciplinary record in recent seasons and his overall contributions to football as reasons to reconsider the initial decision. Ultimately, Ronaldo was handed a 30-day suspension and a fine of €255 (£215). The ruling document indicates that he cited three main points in his favor: his exemplary disciplinary record over the past four seasons, his significant contributions to the sport, and his willingness to clarify the circumstances surrounding his departure. To bolster his case, he listed his numerous club titles and national team achievements, which include the 2016 European Championship and two Nations League crowns. He also highlighted his five Ballon d'Or awards and the honors he has received from state officials. The disciplinary council took his accomplishments into account, resulting in a reduction of both his suspension and fine. His penalty was cut in half again because he accepted responsibility for his actions. Interestingly, Ronaldo's suspension will coincide with a period devoid of international fixtures. It remains uncertain if he plans to rejoin the national team or if coach Jorge Jesus will consider him for future selections. The events leading up to Ronaldo's departure from the training camp offer more clarity. After coach Jesus asserted his authority in a press conference, Ronaldo requested a vehicle from the FPF and headed to Copenhagen airport. On the way, he informed FPF president Pedro Proença that he wasn't in the right mindset to stay with the team. The ruling stated that Ronaldo failed to inform or justify his departure to anyone involved with the national team, missing over 30 activities, including travel, training sessions, and meals from September 30 to October 4. The FPF noted that Ronaldo's promise on social media to reveal "the whole truth" about his exit only attracted more unwanted attention to the incident. Given his global stature, the federation argued he should have been more cautious about how he expressed his dissatisfaction with the coach's decisions. Instead, his Instagram post on the day of his departure stirred even more speculation, as he hinted that he would eventually disclose the reasons behind leaving the national team. Portugal is set to play Denmark again on November 14 in Braga.
