Raskin Content at Rangers but Pondering Future Options
Nicolas Raskin is feeling "really happy" at Rangers, but he’s also contemplating what the future holds as January approaches. The Belgian midfielder, aged 25, recently netted his first goal of the season during a thrilling 2-2 draw against Dundee, marking his presence in the squad with seven consecutive starts. Raskin faced speculation about a potential summer transfer and even missed some games due to that uncertainty. Since his arrival at Rangers in January 2023, he has made over 150 appearances and earned 22 caps for the Belgian national team. Recounting his experience, Raskin admitted, "It wasn't that difficult" to shift focus back to Rangers post-World Cup and transfer rumors. However, he did find it tough to watch from the sidelines while the team played. "The hardest part was not being able to play. Watching the boys on the pitch was the toughest thing I've faced during that window," he explained. As an ambitious player, Raskin expressed his desire to continually strive for greater challenges. "I thought there might be a chance for a new challenge after the World Cup, but I've never pushed for anything because I’m really happy here. This club has played a significant role in my journey to the Belgian national team, which means a lot to me." Raskin is at ease with the situation, stating, "I don’t need to push anything. The manager has been fantastic with me since his arrival. We have plenty of time before January, and our focus is on winning as many games as possible. I truly don’t know what the future holds." When prompted about the possibility of extending his contract, Raskin remarked, "That’s not really up to me. It’s in the club’s hands." Manager Derek McInnes echoed the sentiment, emphasizing the importance of Raskin as a key player. "We’re not looking to lose players in January. Nico has been crucial for us, and we hope he continues to be a vital part of a successful Rangers team this season." He added, "January isn’t a time to lose key players. Clubs can come in with offers that exceed a player’s market value. Nico had some opportunities at the end of the transfer window, but he’s eager to stay and help us succeed. Unless something exceptional comes along, we’ll keep working together." On another note, McInnes mentioned that a sickness bug has been affecting the squad, putting two of his regular starters in doubt for Saturday’s match against St Johnstone.
