Paris St-Germain's highly anticipated Ligue 1 showdown with Lyon has been moved to Monday, as Paris braces for another wave of protests this weekend.
Originally set to kick off at 19:45 GMT on Sunday, the match will now take place at 20:30 on Monday night. The Ligue de Football Professionnel (LFP) confirmed the change in a statement released on Friday after local police deemed the original schedule unsafe.
French authorities are gearing up for a major security operation in response to planned demonstrations on Saturday. Last weekend, around 550,000 individuals took to the streets to voice their frustrations over issues like rising fuel prices and the cost of living, with protests escalating after weeks of student unrest.
These marches have spanned several major cities, including the capital, and have unfortunately seen some violent incidents, looting, and property damage.
The task of maintaining order is further complicated by an NFL game featuring the Pittsburgh Steelers and New Orleans Saints at the Stade de France on Sunday, requiring a significant police presence.
This game will occur in Saint-Denis, roughly 10 kilometers from where the protests are expected to commence at Place de la Bastille.
The impact of these disruptions is being felt across France's football calendar, with Toulouse's match against Troyes also rescheduled from Saturday to Sunday at the request of authorities.
As for the teams, reigning champions PSG currently sit second in the league after seven matches, with Lyon leading the way on 14 points, ahead on goal difference.
Interestingly, the rescheduled match will coincide with the Ballon d'Or ceremony taking place in London, where injured PSG stars Ousmane Dembele, the 2025 winner, and Khvicha Kvaratskhelia are among this year's nominees.
