Pressure Mounts on Pierre Sage: Two Crucial Matches Ahead for Crystal Palace

Pierre Sage is feeling the heat at Crystal Palace as the pressure mounts following a disappointing start to the season. With the Eagles suffering a heavy defeat to local rivals Brighton, club chairman Steve Parish has handed Sage a critical opportunity to turn things around against Besiktas and Newcastle this week.
Had Crystal Palace started the season under Oliver Glasner, they likely wouldn't be in this predicament. While they’ve faced a few expected results, including a loss to Ipswich while down to ten men, it’s the overall quality of their performances that’s raised eyebrows.
Despite a couple of wins, the lack of cohesion and defensive frailty has left Sage’s job hanging by a thread. With the team currently conceding 17 goals in just seven Premier League matches, they hold the unwanted record for the most goals allowed in the league.
Sage has maintained a positive demeanor with the press since taking over, but his frustration is palpable in recent interviews. The Frenchman is also contending with an array of available managerial talent that could easily replace him.
When they sought a new head coach in the summer, Crystal Palace's hierarchy had their eye on several established names like Thomas Frank, Gareth Southgate, and Domenico Tedesco, all of whom are currently without jobs. The club's interest in Kieran McKenna is notable too, but appointing him would come with a hefty £8 million price tag if done before June.
Sage’s past success with Lens, notably their strong Ligue 1 finish and a French Cup victory, was a significant factor in his hiring. Yet, fans feel he has been dealt a difficult hand, particularly with the inadequate replacements for key defenders Maxence Lacroix and Marc Guehi.
The absence of Axel Disasi, who was expected to lead the back line, has further complicated matters. Injuries to Chadi Riad and Takehiro Tomiyasu have left Sage with little choice but to field an unchanged back three, a rare occurrence in such a demanding competition.
Midfield dynamics also need urgent attention, especially after Adam Wharton struggled against Brighton. While Daichi Kamada has been deployed further up the pitch, the return of Ismaila Sarr necessitates a reconfiguration. Quinten Timber has shown promise but may need to adopt a more disciplined approach while the team continues to leak goals.
A hamstring injury to Timber could force Kamada into a deeper role, which might actually benefit the squad. However, results must improve quickly, or the patience of the fans will wear thin.
After speaking with Timber, it’s clear there’s still belief among the players that Sage can turn things around. Although there have been whispers of discontent regarding his communication style, the majority of the squad appears to back him as they face this critical juncture.
Sage left Champions League football behind to take on the challenges of the Premier League, but right now, he's got just two games to prove he can adapt and get results.
