Chelsea kicked off their post-international break campaign with a resounding performance that bodes well for Xabi Alonso's side. Pedro Neto was the star of the show, netting two goals that handed Everton their first defeat of the season, while Chelsea also celebrated their first Premier League clean sheet since January. Sadly, the match was marred by a worrying head injury to Emi Martínez, who had to be stretchered off after receiving treatment for several minutes.
Both teams faced goalkeeping challenges, with Jordan Pickford struggling once again, contributing to Everton's self-inflicted wounds. Yet, Chelsea’s victory was well-deserved, especially considering the contrasting displays in the second half.
The first half was more about physicality than finesse, with Everton holding the upper hand. They could feel hard done by, having to face 11 Chelsea players by halftime, particularly after Morgan Rogers narrowly avoided a second yellow for a risky challenge on James Garner just before the whistle. Though the clash left both players shaken, referee Paul Tierney opted not to punish further.
Rogers’s reckless tackle mirrored an earlier booking for Harrison Armstrong in a half that featured five yellow cards, largely fueled by the rivalry on display. Everton's frustrations heightened when Rogers was involved in Neto's opening goal shortly after the break.
Chelsea had been kept at bay in the first half, thanks to Pickford’s save from Cole Palmer and Jarrad Branthwaite’s block on a Jordan Henderson shot. Everton had their own chances to take the lead, including a missed opportunity from Thierno Barry, who failed to capitalize on a well-placed cross from Jack Grealish, sending a tame header straight at Martínez.
Despite some pressure from the home side, Chelsea began to shift the momentum as the first half closed. Moisés Caicedo nearly opened the scoring with a thunderous volley that rattled the bar after a well-worked corner routine.
Neto came close to scoring just before halftime and made no mistake 44 seconds after the restart. A defensive lapse from Maitland-Niles and Pickford allowed Jorrel Hato, Alonso’s only change from the previous match, to set up Neto's opener with a low cross that he finished with ease, leaving Pickford scrambling.
The match took a serious turn when Martínez collided with Branthwaite while contesting a free-kick, requiring extensive treatment before being taken off in a neck brace, to the dismay of the home crowd. However, Martínez did manage to give Branthwaite a thumbs up, reassuring the concerned Everton defender.
With Mike Penders stepping in for his Premier League debut, Everton's threat diminished, and Chelsea expertly managed the game. The victory was firmly sealed in stoppage time when a free-kick from Henderson deflected off Barry and Tyrique George, landing perfectly for Neto, who calmly slotted home his second of the match past Pickford.
