Moyes Taken Aback by Everton's Surprise Sale Announcement
David Moyes was caught off guard by the announcement that Everton is on the market again. The Friedkin Group (TFG), led by American billionaire Dan Friedkin, revealed on Friday that they might consider selling a controlling stake in the club, just a year and a half after completing their takeover in December 2024. "I was surprised; they just came in a year and a half ago," Moyes said during a press conference, admitting that he only discovered the news at the same time as the fans. He sensed the ownership's wavering commitment during the last transfer window, which raised his eyebrows. "Most owners typically stay for much longer," he continued. "We all thought they would be here for 20 to 30 years. But perhaps, with the transfer window and everything that happened, I had an inkling this could be coming. It's pretty clear for Everton fans to see now." Moyes returned to Everton with hopes of restoring the club's former glory, aiming for European competition. However, he acknowledged that the summer's difficulties have weighed heavily on the squad. "I learned about this morning's news just like everyone else. I’m a little surprised, but maybe not entirely," he said, reflecting on the turmoil that Everton fans have endured. The recent years have been tumultuous for Everton supporters, with previous attempts to sell the club failing. Moshiri's efforts to hand over the reins to 777 Partners and John Textor collapsed, and even TFG's negotiations faced hurdles before they finally took control. Moyes expressed empathy for the fans who must now navigate another uncertain chapter. "They’ve faced so much turmoil, and this is the last thing they wanted to hear. Last season was relatively calm, with no relegation threats, but now we’re left wondering, 'Who will be the new owner?'" When asked if he felt misled about the club's future, Moyes insisted that his love for Everton remains unwavering. "I would have bought into anything because I care about this club. But it’s the supporters I feel for most. They deserve better." While he remains focused on the immediate task of winning games, Moyes acknowledged the uncertainty his own future might hold. "I haven't really thought about that yet. The players are doing great, and I’m confident the fans will rally around the team during tough times." Moyes remains optimistic about finding the right buyer for the club. "It’s a fantastic club for anyone looking to invest. If someone wants to talk to me about it, I’ll gladly share how valuable Everton is." In a statement released on Friday, TFG outlined that when they took charge, Everton was in financial disarray. Their initial focus was on stabilizing the club and supporting its long-awaited stadium project. Now, with that foundation supposedly secure, they feel it's the right time to consider the next chapter—while ensuring that any potential new owners are committed to moving the club forward. The statement also emphasized TFG's commitment to supporting Everton and making a positive impact in the community during this transition period. Meanwhile, Sky Sports News journalist Alan Myers noted that there had been whispers for some time that TFG's stay at Everton might be short-lived, as they assessed the hefty financial requirements to restore the club to its former heights.
