Enzo Maresca is taking a hands-on approach to reviving Phil Foden's form at Manchester City, and it's paying off. The midfielder, who had faced challenges in recent years, has netted four times in just two matches, hinting that he might be on the path back to his best.
As City gears up to face Aston Villa this Saturday, they’ll be looking to extend their flawless Premier League run under Maresca. The good news for the team is that Erling Haaland is fit and ready after a brief rest during the Champions League clash against AEK Athens.
Maresca shared that he had meaningful conversations with Foden early in their journey together. “I sat down with Phil a couple of times, especially at the start,” he explained. “It’s not about love, but showing him his importance to the team.”
He continued, “I’ve known Phil for years, and I recognize his talent. He faced challenges recently, but having players like him makes us a stronger team. My job is to help him rediscover his status as one of England's finest. But it’s a long season, and consistency is key.”
At 26, Foden faces stiff competition for his spot, especially with the likes of Rayan Cherki, whom Maresca considers “one of the best players in Europe.”
Under Maresca, City has only tasted defeat once in competitive play, a setback against Paris Saint-Germain in the Champions League. With seven consecutive league victories, they sit three points clear at the top of the table. Maresca is also awaiting updates on Matheus Nunes, Mateo Kovacic, and Nico O’Reilly, who missed the AEK match. “The atmosphere is positive, and while we’re pleased with our start, there’s an eagerness for more victories,” he remarked.
