Love and Loyalty: Mary Fowler's Heartfelt Return to Support Nathan Cleary
Mary Fowler has stepped back from the Australian national team, citing personal reasons, to be by the side of her partner, injured rugby league star Nathan Cleary. Cleary, recovering from significant surgery, expressed his heartfelt gratitude for Fowler’s decision to fly back to Australia to support him. Taking to Instagram, he shared their recent moments together, saying, "I can’t thank you enough for flying to the other side of the world to look after me during this past week of recovery. I’m a very lucky man and so, so grateful." Fowler, who is currently with Manchester City, echoed his sentiments, playfully adding that looking after Cleary was easy because he’s a "big cutie patootie." The 20-year-old forward’s absence from the Matildas was felt during their recent friendly against Germany, where the team struggled without her and ultimately lost 4-2. Before the match, Matildas coach Joe Montemurro acknowledged Fowler's situation, emphasizing the importance of creating a supportive environment for players, particularly during private matters. The decision was made after careful discussions involving all parties, ensuring everyone backed the choice. The Matildas also missed midfielder Kyra Cooney-Cross, who is navigating her own challenges following the passing of her mother. As for Fowler, she will not be available for the upcoming friendly against Haiti in France, either. Cleary, on the other hand, is dealing with the aftermath of a broken leg and surgeries on his foot, requiring a wheelchair for mobility. In photos shared, Fowler can be seen helping with Cleary’s medical needs, showcasing their strong bond. Looking ahead, Manchester City will face Brighton in their next Women’s Super League match, but for now, Fowler’s focus remains on supporting Cleary through his recovery.
