What lies ahead for Michael Carrick and Manchester United? Their next challenge comes on Wednesday with a trip to Como, but after another missed opportunity to claim just their second league victory of the season, one has to wonder where this struggling team is headed.
Sunday's match showcased the same old issues under Carrick’s management. The players lacked rhythm and control, and the unusual formation employed raised eyebrows, leaving fans with the unsettling feeling that disaster could strike at any moment.
Bryan Mbeumo gave Leeds the lead in the first half, but it was Dominic Calvert-Lewin who equalized after the break, capitalizing on the fragility of Carrick's squad. Despite not being particularly impressive, Leeds didn't have to be, as the visitors failed to assert themselves at Elland Road. This was reminiscent of Ruben Amorim's final days, where he faced the same scrutiny after a similar draw.
While Carrick remains in charge for now, questions about his future linger. United has only managed to secure one league win—way back in August against Ipswich—and the upcoming clash in the Champions League against Como is shaping up to be crucial.
In a twist of irony, Carrick selected Lisandro Martínez just days after criticizing the club’s director of football, Jason Wilcox, for poor recruitment. Martínez’s apology seemed to clear the way for his inclusion, though he was substituted at halftime.
Daniel Farke's unchanged Leeds side was buoyed by a supportive crowd, who relished Martínez's early misstep when he kicked the ball out of play. United started with a unique 3-4-3 formation, which stifled Bruno Fernandes’s ability to orchestrate from midfield, although he had some freedom in his role.
Tension mounted as Leeds fans cheered a missed foul by referee Darren England when Carlos Baleba brought down Anton Stach. The crowd erupted again when Fernandes was booked for a reckless challenge on Tarik Muharemovic, much to their delight.
The match was a physical contest but lacked genuine scoring opportunities. Gudmundsson, playing as a wing-back, nearly caught United off-guard with a cross that evaded Harry Maguire, while Bogle echoed this as Leeds briefly took control.
After a slow start, the game finally sparked to life. A promising chance fell to Mbeumo, whose close-range header from a Tielemans cross went horribly wide. But soon after, Mbeumo capitalized on a slick move to put Leeds ahead, finishing off a quick exchange that dismantled United's defense.
With the second half underway, Carrick introduced Noussair Mazraoui, hoping for a turnaround. United managed to hold off Leeds for a brief period, but disaster struck when a corner led to a goal from Calvert-Lewin, who overpowered Mbeumo to fire home.
The home crowd roared as Leeds piled on the pressure, with Tanaka’s volley narrowly missing the target. United struggled to respond, with Baleba's long-range shot epitomizing their lack of creativity. Fernandes did manage a couple of attempts, but neither troubled Leeds keeper James Trafford.
In the 73rd minute, Farke opted for a change, bringing on Lukas Nmecha, while Carrick replaced Baleba with Mason Mount. However, these substitutions failed to ignite the spark needed for a winning goal.
