Laos Footballer Arrested Amid Match-Fixing Scandal
In a shocking turn of events, a Laos international footballer has been arrested over allegations of match-fixing linked to a betting syndicate. Soukphachan Lueanthala, who plays as a winger for Salavan United and represented Laos at the recent 2026 Asean Championship, is accused of facilitating match manipulation during the tournament. The Laos Football Federation (LFF) has referred the case to law enforcement, raising concerns about bribery and illegal gambling activities. Reports suggest that Lueanthala is suspected of orchestrating the alleged fixing on behalf of a betting group believed to be operating out of Vietnam. Sources close to the national team revealed that Lueanthala was taken into custody after several players were questioned by police following their last match in the tournament against Myanmar, where they suffered a heavy 7-2 defeat. While the LFF and local authorities have yet to officially confirm the arrest, credible reports indicate that the player is indeed in police custody. The Laos team had a dismal showing in the tournament, following up the loss to Myanmar with three other significant defeats, including a 5-0 thrashing by Thailand and a 4-0 loss to Malaysia. This poor performance has raised eyebrows, especially given the team's previous achievements two years ago when they managed to secure notable draws against higher-ranked opponents. On August 7, the LFF announced that it had initiated an investigation into the matter before handing it over to the authorities. According to an anonymous source with insights into the allegations, Lueanthala was reportedly involved in directing other players and acting as a conduit for those implicated in the scheme. Laos, under the management of Vladica Grujic, has struggled to replicate its prior success, and this latest scandal adds to a troubling history of match-fixing in the nation. The Asian Football Confederation (AFC) previously banned Thipphonexay Inthavongsa for life in 2020 over similar charges related to a 2017 match against Hong Kong. The AFC has been approached for comments regarding the current situation and whether they are aiding Lao authorities, but they have yet to respond. The LFF has also remained silent on the matter. An insider with extensive knowledge of Lao football claims that match-fixing has plagued the sport for years, often driven by the financial struggles of players. “Until last year, they were getting just $10 a day when they joined the national team,” he explained. One player allegedly confessed to fixing three matches for $10,000 each, highlighting the grave implications of such actions on the integrity of Lao football. The source lamented that this corruption is driving away experienced players, leaving younger talent to fill the gaps. “There is such talent,” he said. “They deserve so much better than this.”
