Khvicha Kvaratskhelia, the dynamic winger for Paris Saint-Germain, is facing a lengthy recovery period following a serious injury. The 25-year-old sustained a ruptured anterior cruciate ligament (ACL) during PSG's thrilling 4-2 victory over Barcelona in the Champions League on Tuesday night.
PSG confirmed that Kvaratskhelia will undergo surgery in the coming days, but they haven't provided a specific timeline for his return. Given the severity of the injury, there's a real possibility that he won't see any action for the remainder of the season, including the crucial Champions League clash against Aston Villa on December 8.
Last season, Kvaratskhelia was named the Champions League's best player, contributing significantly to PSG's success in clinching back-to-back titles and Ligue 1 glory. This injury is a significant setback for the European champions as they strive for a third consecutive Champions League title.
The Georgian forward joined PSG from Napoli for £59 million plus add-ons in January 2025 and quickly established himself as one of the premier forwards in the game. Unfortunately for PSG, they also suffered injuries to Ousmane Dembele, the reigning Ballon d'Or winner, and captain Marquinhos during the same match against Barcelona.
Both Dembele and Marquinhos are dealing with thigh injuries and are expected to be sidelined for several weeks. Additionally, Nuno Mendes is also out after missing the Barcelona match due to an injury sustained in a Ligue 1 game against Strasbourg.
Despite these setbacks, PSG has shown impressive form in European competition this season, having already defeated Manchester City and Barcelona by identical 4-2 scores. Currently, they sit atop the league table with a perfect record from three matches, while holding second place in Ligue 1, level on points with leaders Lyon.
Commenting on the situation, Sky Sports' Laura Hunter emphasized the heavy toll of the injuries on PSG's ambitions. Kvaratskhelia's absence is particularly disappointing for fans and the football community, as he's a player who brings excitement to the pitch.
While PSG boasts a wealth of talent to mitigate the loss of Kvaratskhelia, including promising players like Desire Doue and Maghnes Akliouche, this injury is undoubtedly a hurdle for coach Luis Enrique. It won't derail their pursuit of a historic European three-peat, but it certainly complicates their quest.
