Álvaro Arbeloa faced tough questions about his ability to handle pressure after Fulham's disheartening defeat at Ipswich, marking six games without a win in the Premier League. Just moments away from clinching his first managerial victory, the former Real Madrid boss watched his team unravel after a brilliant strike from Ryan Sessegnon in the 55th minute.
Ipswich stunned the visitors with a thunderous shot from Abdoul Ouattara that found the back of the net in the 88th minute. To add insult to injury, Dara O’Shea headed in Jack Clarke’s free-kick in the second minute of stoppage time, sealing a painful late loss for Fulham, who now sit at the bottom of the table following Tottenham's draw with Manchester United.
Despite the mounting pressure, Arbeloa remained defiant in his post-match comments. "I never worry about my position. I don’t feel fear. You cannot be a coach if you feel it. You have to work, take decisions, and show confidence to your players," he stated. He emphasized that his focus is on the club's performance rather than his own job security, acknowledging the need for points after six games.
After the final whistle, Arbeloa quickly headed down the tunnel following a handshake with Ipswich's Gary O’Neil, knowing Fulham now trails promoted Ipswich by seven points as they prepare for a crucial match against Hull on Saturday.
When asked about managing the pressure, Arbeloa confidently replied, "Just to let you know, that pressure is part of my life since I was a kid. It is normal in football. It’s important for me and I like it." However, this defeat marked Fulham's fourth loss in the league this season, with the team conceding late goals in matches against Sunderland, Crystal Palace, Manchester United, and now Ipswich.
In contrast, O’Neil celebrated his team's third victory of the season, highlighting the contributions of substitutes Chuba Akpom and Clarke during the thrilling finish. "I’m proud of the players and proud of the way we finished the game," he said. "They showed exactly what they are – together, hard-working, and full of quality. We looked fitter than Fulham in the last 20 minutes, and that was key."
O’Neil also praised his team’s ability to compete against a seasoned Premier League side, claiming it was an impressive performance that showcased their determination.
