Injury Woes for Spurs and Chelsea's New Discipline Ahead of Clash
Tottenham's manager, Roberto De Zerbi, has come to the defense of his medical staff amidst a growing list of injuries as they gear up for their match against Chelsea at Stamford Bridge. The team is hoping to secure only their second victory in 42 encounters across all competitions. De Zerbi welcomed the return of Pedro Porro from injury and noted that Andy Robertson, Omar Marmoush, and Dominic Solanke are in good shape despite previous fitness concerns. However, the news isn’t all positive, as Destiny Udogie remains sidelined, and Tosin Adarabioyo's availability is uncertain. James Maddison has missed three days of training following a win over Coventry, putting his participation in doubt. Dejan Kulusevski's return from a long layoff is also being handled with caution, leaving De Zerbi potentially without nine players, including suspended Rodrigo Bentancur and long-term absentees like Lucas Bergvall and Savio. Spurs' recent struggles at Stamford Bridge are no secret, but De Zerbi downplayed the historical context. "We didn’t play in the past for Tottenham, and I wasn't the coach in those seasons. We have our own issues to tackle, and this isn't one of them," he stated. Meanwhile, Chelsea’s Xabi Alonso has credited greater emotional control for his team’s improved discipline this season, which saw them collect a staggering 11 red cards last year. Since taking the helm, Alonso has focused on this aspect, and it appears to be paying off. Chelsea goes into Saturday's match without a single red card this season, showcasing a smarter approach, especially after their 2-0 victory over Everton. "Emotional control is vital," Alonso explained. "If the players are focused, they can avoid mistakes and unnecessary reactions." He also acknowledged the role of experienced signings in maintaining composure on the field. "Having seasoned players helps calm the situation and keeps us focused during critical moments," he added. As Spurs visit Stamford Bridge, known for its electric atmosphere, Alonso is aware of the challenges that come with controlling the game amidst the crowd's energy. "It's tough to dominate fully in the Premier League, especially when the fans thrive on the excitement of the game. You can't afford to relax when you're ahead." Alonso further emphasized that while he can guide from the sidelines, it’s ultimately the players on the pitch who make the decisive moves. "I can offer input, but it’s the experienced players who truly feel the game." On a concerning note for Chelsea, goalkeeper Emiliano Martínez is ruled out after suffering a broken jaw against Everton. Young Belgian Mike Penders is set to step in, and Alonso sees shades of his compatriot Thibaut Courtois in Penders. "Thibaut even mentioned that he sees similarities between them," Alonso revealed. In a different context, Andoni Iraola, the Liverpool manager, insists that young star Rio Ngumoha should be allowed to learn from his mistakes without facing unrealistic expectations. Ngumoha dazzled in Liverpool's Champions League comeback against Villarreal, and as he adapts to the right wing, Iraola is keen to support his development.
