Hojlund's Penalty Sinks Wales as Denmark Claims Victory in Cardiff
Wales faced a disappointing 1-0 loss against Denmark in their UEFA Nations League clash at Cardiff City Stadium, with Rasmus Hojlund netting the decisive goal from the penalty spot. This match marked a tough outing for Craig Bellamy's squad, who now find themselves with three losses in their last four matches. The turning point came from a mistake by Wrexham goalkeeper Danny Ward in the second half. After giving the ball away to Gustav Isaksen in a dangerous position, Ward tried to make amends but ended up fouling the Danish forward, resulting in a clear penalty. Hojlund calmly converted the penalty in the 75th minute, securing Denmark's second consecutive win over Wales after a 2-0 triumph in Copenhagen just a week prior. While Wales managed to pull off a commendable win against World Cup quarter-finalists Norway just days earlier, it seemed that victory took a toll on their energy levels. In contrast to his usual rotation, Bellamy made only one change to his lineup, bringing in Brennan Johnson to replace Daniel James in the attack. Denmark was without their Brentford playmaker Mikkel Damsgaard and lost captain Pierre-Emile Hojbjerg to injury early in the match, complicating their plans. Wales had a couple of opportunities as Ethan Ampadu fired over from distance, and Johnson missed a volley at the far post. Denmark, however, posed a more significant threat, launching an early warning shot when Hojlund’s effort was easily saved by Ward after a defensive lapse by Ben Cabango. Despite holding a slight edge in possession during the first half, Wales couldn't convert that into clear-cut chances. Denmark’s pressure mounted with Isaksen's appeals for a penalty after being brought down in the box and several near misses from Morten Hjulmand and Isaksen himself. As the second half kicked off, Wales struggled to maintain their earlier intensity. Hojlund almost got on the scoresheet again, but Ward made a fantastic save. Sorba Thomas had fewer chances to shine than in the previous game, while Johnson's angled shot went over the bar. Cabango's second yellow card meant he would miss the upcoming match against Norway, adding to Wales' woes. Despite a flurry of substitutions aimed at reigniting the attack, Wales failed to trouble Denmark's sturdy defense. The home crowd's optimism waned after Ward's blunder, denying them a clean sheet for the first time since November. Despite the loss, Wales climbed to third in Group A4, as Norway’s defeat in Portugal has them languishing at the bottom. After the match, Wales defender Ben Davies reflected on the game, stating, "It was a tough way to concede and a disappointing loss. We gave it our all and I'm very proud of the group. We'll approach the next games with nothing to lose."
