Gary Neville Expands His Podcast Empire: The Overlap Goes Daily
The Overlap has taken a significant leap, now offering daily content featuring stars like Steven Gerrard and Joe Hart. This expansion is just the latest chapter in an ever-growing podcast empire. If you take a look back at Nathan Barley, the 2005 sitcom by Chris Morris, it eerily anticipated our current obsession with technology and social media. When Barley dubbed himself a "self-facilitating media node," it was a nod to the rise of the creator economy. Yet, who could’ve imagined that former footballers would flood into this space? Nowadays, if a retired player isn't hosting a podcast or YouTube channel, it begs the question: did they even play? Beyond Gary Lineker’s expansive Goalhanger empire, which often veers into broader societal topics, Gary Neville stands as a titan in the podcast realm. His platform, The Overlap, has largely maintained a focus on football, recently shelving a rugby podcast while continuing its cricket discussions. This summer, Neville landed Wayne Rooney for a Manchester United-themed collaboration with YouTuber Mark Goldbridge. Just last week, The Overlap went daily, expanding its programming to weekdays at 4 PM. The online launch featured Jamie Carragher playfully sparring with Goldbridge, whose real name is Brent Di Cesare. The banter was so entertaining that it left Neville nearly choking on his Huel drink. The Overlap has cultivated a family-like atmosphere, with Neville and Carragher resembling the wise parents guiding the conversation. Jill Scott plays the quirky aunt, while Roy Keane and Ian Wright add some cheeky humor to the mix. The podcast has not only gained popularity but has also softened Keane’s tough image, even turning behind-the-scenes worker Kiaran Saunders into a bit of a cult hero for his snack contributions. Neville is undoubtedly charging ahead, bulldozing his way into the crowded football podcast market, with newsletters on the horizon. The cast of characters has expanded significantly. Mondays now feature Steven Gerrard reviewing weekend matches with Becky Ives, who recently defended Florian Wirtz: "Don’t give up on him." Tuesdays pair Kelly Cates with Ashley Young, while Tim Sherwood and Jamie Redknapp reunite on Wednesdays. These two are no strangers to collaboration; back in the mid-2000s, they launched a lifestyle magazine aimed at players, which ultimately fell flat despite its high-end aspirations. Fast forward twenty years, and the exclusivity of that venture has transformed into a more accessible format, with football’s 90s legends joining Neville’s ranks. Mark Crossley and Duncan Ferguson are an unexpected but intriguing duo. Crossley, once known for saving a Matthew Le Tissier penalty, has enjoyed a successful speaking career, while Ferguson, who famously avoided the media during his playing days, made a splash during ITV’s World Cup 2026 coverage. In their latest episode, Ferguson suggested that Gianluigi Donnarumma might be past his prime, to which Crossley promptly responded, "He’s 27, actually." Their discussion veered into the impact of video assistant referees on the game, a hot topic for any true football aficionado. Whether Ferguson’s new role as Glentoran manager will affect their podcasting dynamic remains to be seen, but it hasn’t stopped Robbie Savage from juggling multiple media gigs. Two more goalkeepers have joined the fray. Last Friday, Joe Hart and Peter Schmeichel discussed Manchester City and its current challenges. While Hart acknowledged his love for the club, Schmeichel didn’t hold back, asserting that City’s owners are failing to understand the community. "They’ve built towers and homes but don’t get this place," he stated, prompting Hart to defend Khaldoon al-Mubarak, who he believes does understand the city. The dialogue around Manchester City is likely to continue, bringing former players into discussions that may ruffle some feathers. Notably, Neville’s business ventures align with developments funded by Abu Dhabi in Manchester, highlighting the inevitable overlaps in this multi-faceted football landscape.
