Elton John Expresses Heartache Over Watford's Struggles
Elton John, the legendary musician and former owner of Watford, has shared his feelings of disappointment regarding the club’s current performance after a shocking 4-0 defeat at home to Burnley. The Hornets are languishing in 20th place in the Championship, having lost three consecutive league matches and five out of their last six. In a now-deleted Instagram comment on a club post, John expressed his emotions candidly: "As a lifetime supporter of Watford FC, I am very upset and disappointed at the decline over the past few weeks. I really feel for the supporters who have to watch this." Watford recently appointed Alessio Dionisi as their manager, marking him as the 12th head coach since the end of the 2020-21 season. Dionisi, who signed a two-year contract in June, initially managed to steer the team through a tough start, including a notable victory against Southampton and draws against Wrexham and West Ham. However, their fortunes have taken a downturn, with only a single victory in their last six outings, which came against Preston last month. Saturday’s match was particularly grim, as Watford found themselves 3-0 down within the first 25 minutes against a Burnley side that had previously registered just one league win in 2026. Elton John, a devoted Watford fan since childhood, previously owned the club twice. His first tenure witnessed an impressive rise from the fourth tier to a second-place finish in Division One, alongside European football in the 1970s and 1980s under Graham Taylor. He returned to the club in the mid-1990s, reappointing Taylor, who led Watford into the Premier League in 1999 through consecutive promotions. After stepping away for the second time in 2002, the 79-year-old now has a stand named in his honor at Vicarage Road and has penned a book titled 'Watford Forever' detailing his affection for the club.
