Cliftonville's League Cup Glory Vanishes Amid Registration Scandal
Cliftonville's victory in the League Cup final against Glentoran has taken a shocking turn. After winning 4-0 at Seaview in July, they have now been stripped of the title for fielding two ineligible players. Glentoran, who finished as the runners-up, raised concerns with the Northern Ireland Football League (NIFL) following that decisive match. The league has since ruled in their favor, awarding them a 3-0 win instead. In addition to losing the title, Cliftonville will also have to pay a £500 fine. The NIFL Competitions Committee confirmed that the players in question were not registered according to competition rules. In their statement, the Committee acknowledged Cliftonville Ladies for their transparency and cooperation during the investigation. They appreciate the club's integrity in what has been a challenging situation. Star striker Caitlin McGuinness had a standout performance in the final, scoring twice, while her sister Kirsty and Danielle Maxwell also found the net, celebrating what they believed was their fourth consecutive title. Looking ahead, Cliftonville will face Glentoran again in the Women's Irish Cup final on October 24 at Windsor Park. Despite this setback, Cliftonville has already secured the league title, finishing nine points clear of their city rivals.
