When Paris Saint-Germain meets Barcelona, fans can expect fireworks in this season's Champions League. As they kick off match week three, both teams stand out as the top scorers, with PSG holding the slight edge based on goals scored.
Last season, PSG secured a 2-1 victory over Barcelona in a similar matchup, and they went on to clinch back-to-back Champions League titles, a feat only matched by Real Madrid in the competition's history. French football analyst Julien Laurens believes Tuesday's encounter will be a captivating spectacle.
Since the start of the 2025 Club World Cup, Barcelona and PSG have been among the most prolific clubs, ranking second and third in goals scored per match in Europe's top leagues. Barcelona has netted 192 goals in 68 matches, averaging 2.82 per game, while PSG follows closely with 154 goals in 67 games at a rate of 2.3.
Despite being labeled the least competitive of the major European leagues, PSG has been a dominant force in Ligue 1, claiming 12 of the last 14 titles, including the last five in a row. On the other hand, Barcelona, the reigning La Liga champions, finished last season eight points clear of their arch-rivals Real Madrid.
In the Champions League era, PSG made history by becoming only the second team to win consecutive titles, while Bayern Munich has matched their remarkable achievement in recent seasons. A closer look at the statistics reveals that the accolades for both clubs are well-deserved. In expected goals (xG) metrics, Barcelona (2.56) ranks second and PSG (2.22) third among the top five leagues.
Barcelona has also excelled in goals scored, sitting second in total goals, while PSG ranks fifth in that category. However, it's worth noting that PSG has played fewer league matches than other top performers like Barcelona, Inter Milan, and Manchester City, which could skew the numbers.
Thanks to their squad depth, PSG can make significant rotations without compromising results. They recently triumphed over Strasbourg 3-1, even after making eight changes from their previous Champions League victory.
European football expert Raphael Honigstein praised PSG for managing their squad effectively, giving players the rest they deserve. Barcelona, too, has bolstered their lineup this season, enhancing their attacking capabilities significantly.
With three or more goals scored in 10 of their 11 matches this season, Barcelona's firepower has been impressive. BBC Sport's Elizabeth Conway noted the impact of new signings like Anthony Gordon and Karim Adeyemi, who have injected pace and creativity into the team's attack.
At the helm of PSG is Luis Enrique, a familiar face for Barcelona fans. Having spent eight years as a player at Camp Nou and later coaching the first team, Enrique has a wealth of experience. During his tenure at Barcelona, he clinched La Liga twice, the Copa del Rey three times, and the Champions League title in 2015.
Notably, players like Ferran Torres and Ousmane Dembele have made the switch from Barcelona to PSG, adding to the connection between the two clubs. The talent pool at both sides is impressive, with eight of the top 14 players on the 2025 Ballon d'Or list currently playing for PSG or Barcelona.
Among the favorites for this year's award is 19-year-old Lamine Yamal, who has already scored eight goals in La Liga this season. According to Laurens, Yamal's skill set is remarkable, making him a crucial part of Barcelona's attacking line. Even with depth in the squad, his presence significantly enhances their offensive threat.
As fans gear up for this exciting Champions League encounter, both teams will be looking to assert their dominance on the European stage.
