Carrick Calls for Defensive Resurgence Ahead of Como Clash
After Manchester United's recent 1-1 draw against Leeds, Michael Carrick was straightforward in addressing his team’s defensive woes. At a rainy Giuseppe Sinigaglia stadium in Como, Carrick was asked about United’s struggles to maintain clean sheets. His candid reply acknowledged the urgency of the situation. "You're dead right. I can't argue with that," he said, affirming the importance of tightening up defensively. This season has been particularly challenging, with United managing only one clean sheet in ten matches, achieved against Azerbaijan's Sabah FK last month. Carrick recognized that there are aspects of their game that need improvement. "There's definitely parts of our game we have to improve to make things easier. I am fully aware of that," he stated as his squad gears up for Wednesday's Champions League fixture. The issue isn’t just a current trend; it stretches back to last season. Under Carrick’s management, they recorded six clean sheets in 17 matches, but prior to that, they had only managed two clean sheets all season under Ruben Amorim, resulting in a mere nine clean sheets over 63 games. In stark contrast, Arsenal, who face Bayern Munich this week, have secured seven clean sheets in just 11 matches this season, highlighting the disparity in defensive fortitude. For Carrick, consistency in selection is key to achieving a more stable defense. However, that continuity has been elusive. He has only named the same back four just once this season, during a match against Ipswich at Old Trafford. Ahead of the Como game, Carrick provided a fitness update, which he described as "a mixed bag." The highlight was the news that Matthijs de Ligt is back in action after a long injury layoff, although he was sidelined during the last match against Leeds when Lisandro Martinez picked up a thigh issue. With Leny Yoro suspended and Luke Shaw still out, United’s defensive options are looking thin. Shaw is expected to be unavailable for a while, possibly missing several games leading up to the November international break. During the match against Leeds, Diogo Dalot became the fifth player to occupy the left-back position this season, highlighting ongoing issues in that area. Harry Amass could potentially step in as the sixth. Observers have pointed out that the left-back dilemma has been a known issue for some time, one that many feel should have been addressed in the summer transfer window. Notably, United's late interest in Rayan Ait-Nouri from Manchester City suggests they recognized the need for reinforcement. Shaw's injury woes have been severe; after starting 38 league games last season and three this term, he has only managed two appearances since. As Dalot took on the left-back role against Leeds, it became evident that none of the players filling that position are natural left-backs. There was some discussion about Ayden Heaven’s performance, with sources indicating he had more experience in that role during his youth career. As for Harry Amass, who filled in for Shaw during pre-season, there are mixed feelings about his readiness. Carrick, however, stands firm in his belief in the youth, stating, "He's right in contention. At some point, young players need an opportunity." The scrutiny over the lack of competition for Shaw has fallen on Carrick and sporting director Jason Wilcox. Many sympathize with Wilcox, who faced budget constraints that made it tough to address the team's needs adequately. There’s a narrative that the funds spent on signing Andrey Santos from Chelsea could have been better allocated. Carrick, however, sidestepped these discussions, focusing instead on the present squad. "When we've got injuries at different stages, we can always look at what could have been done and where we could have improved," Carrick said diplomatically. "We did what we could do and made the best of it."
