Carlos Baleba Set for Manchester United Debut Against Spurs

Carlos Baleba has officially joined Manchester United on a five-year deal, marking a significant milestone in his career. It's hard to believe that just a short time ago, he had to withdraw from a Cameroon Cup match due to a school exam. Now, he's preparing for a crucial test at Old Trafford this weekend. Baleba, at just 22, should not bear the weight of being the potential savior for Manchester United. But with a transfer fee of £70m, he stands as the most expensive signing of the summer for the club. He’s poised to take on the holding midfield role that has proven troublesome since Casemiro departed in May. United knew about Baleba's ankle injury when they secured his transfer from Brighton on August 25, and they might have to wait until after the international break for him to step onto the pitch. United fans certainly did not expect their team to be languishing in 12th place, with just one victory and five points from their first five matches. To add to the woes, Brighton recently came back from 2-0 down to knock United out of the EFL Cup. The pressure is mounting for Baleba and the team ahead of their clash against a struggling Tottenham side. The upcoming schedule only compounds this pressure, with a series of away games against tough opponents including Atletico Madrid and Leeds. An insider at United described Baleba as “very quick,” noting his impressive ability to cover the ground effectively. Though he’s had limited training sessions, his speed could be a crucial asset for United's midfield. While Andrey Santos shares this pace, Carrick has opted for Kobbie Mainoo and Youri Tielemans in recent matches, relying on their technical skills. Unfortunately, United's defense has been too easily breached, leaving them among only four teams in the league yet to keep a clean sheet. Baleba will need to contribute more than just his speed; he must also make his presence felt off the pitch. Initially shy, he’s gradually finding his voice in the dressing room, and his English has improved since moving to Brighton from Lille for £23.2m in 2023. He has formed a bond with fellow young player Amad Diallo, and their shared experiences have fostered camaraderie during their recovery sessions. Recently, Amad humorously shared a video of Baleba teasing him after Cameroon defeated Ivory Coast in a friendly. Having played alongside new French international Leny Yoro at Lille and with Bryan Mbeumo on the international stage, Baleba is also making connections at United, joking with Patrick Dorgu after last season's final game. United fans are hopeful that Baleba can replicate the performances that drew attention from clubs like Real Madrid, rather than the inconsistencies he faced last season. Reports of distraction from United’s late interest in him are dismissed by Brighton sources, though they haven’t offered other explanations for his dip in form. As it turns out, United’s recruitment team’s efforts from a year ago paid off. After missing out on other options, they moved quickly to secure Baleba just after a shocking defeat on the opening day. Given that teams were quoting over £100m for him a year later, £70m seems like a smart investment – but until he hits the pitch, it’s hard to assess the value of the deal. A matchup between Baleba and Tottenham's new signing Fernandes could be intriguing if they both start at Old Trafford. The stakes are high, as a loss for either side could escalate early-season frustrations into a crisis. Baleba’s cheerful nature should aid in his preparation. He’s eager to showcase his skills, possibly even his signature backflip celebration, although scoring isn’t the primary reason United brought him in. What truly drives Baleba is his determination to succeed, instilled in him by his father through rigorous training. He has even fulfilled a promise to his late mother, who passed away before witnessing her dream home in Douala. His motivation remains strong, as revealed in a recent interview where he spoke about his journey. Baleba is ready to step into the spotlight and prove his worth at Manchester United.
