With gameweek eight on the horizon, FPL expert Holly Shand dives into the pressing decisions facing managers this week.
Enzo Maresca confirmed on Tuesday that Erling Haaland (£13.7m) is ready to start against Aston Villa this Saturday. He sat out Manchester City’s 5-1 win over AEK Athens in the Champions League, but his return immediately makes him a prime candidate for captaincy.
Haaland has netted eight goals in his first seven league matches this season, yet he hasn’t found the net in his last four Premier League outings against Villa. Will this be the week he breaks that streak?
If you’re looking for alternatives, Chelsea’s attackers are worth considering. Joao Pedro (£7.9m) has been their standout performer with five goals and three assists, while Cole Palmer (£9.7m) has the potential for even higher returns, especially with penalty duties in his arsenal.
Injury news complicates things further, as Arsenal's Bukayo Saka (£9.6m) picked up a quadriceps injury in the Champions League, adding to the concerns for fantasy managers. Liverpool's Dominik Szoboszlai (£6.8m) and City's Antoine Semenyo (£8.3m) are already sidelined for the long haul.
City’s midfield is squarely in focus, especially with Semenyo out of the picture, raising hopes for more stable minutes. Rayan Cherki (£8m) is trending in transfers, but Phil Foden (£6.8m) dazzled with a hat-trick recently. Don’t overlook Jeremy Doku (£7.5m), who has already been involved in three goals across his last three games.
Brighton assets are dominating the fantasy landscape, with three of the top five players hailing from the Seagulls. Maxim de Cuyper (£5.3m) leads the pack, closely followed by Pascal Gross (£6.2m), who is tied with Haaland, while Luka Vuskovic (£5.1m) rounds out the top four.
Bart Verbruggen (£4.6m) is also among the top three goalkeepers, and Charalampos Kostoulas (£5.7m) is making waves as one of the leading strikers. Brighton’s offensive prowess is evident, having scored a league-high 23 goals while conceding just five.
It may seem odd to see De Cuyper listed as a defender, but he plays more like an attacking winger, making him a £5.1m asset with clean sheet potential. He leads all defenders with five goal involvements this season, making him a fixture-proof option.
Gross is another player who is hard to bench, especially since he’s on penalties. His nine goal involvements put him in a league of his own, ranking second for key passes and big chances created.
Liverpool continues to struggle at home, yet to secure a league win this season with a dismal two goals scored and five conceded.
Vuskovic stands out for defensive contributions, or 'DefCons,' as Brighton boasts the most clean sheets in the league, five out of seven matches. He’s been a consistent performer, racking up bonuses and contributing to both defense and attack.
Leeds United's Tarik Muharemovic (£5m) is also making his mark with four DefCons and two assists this season. Meanwhile, Coventry City's Bobby Thomas (£4m) leads the way with 84 defensive contributions and has been active in attack with ten shots in the box.
City’s Josko Gvardiol started the season strong with one goal, two clean sheets, and three assists in five outings. However, he’s frustrated owners after being benched in recent matches. With Nico O'Reilly’s injury, Gvardiol might have a chance for more game time. Hold onto him unless your team is in dire need of a shake-up.
These eight players could be key to your FPL success this week.
