Bruno Guimarães faced a whirlwind of emotions as he bid farewell to Newcastle, a club that holds a special place in his heart. With tears in his eyes and memories flooding back, the Brazilian midfielder knew he was stepping into a new chapter at Arsenal, but leaving St James’ Park was anything but easy.
The summer was a rollercoaster for Guimarães. He had a stellar World Cup, yet a missed penalty against Norway in the last-16 cast a shadow over his achievements. When the opportunity to join Arsenal arose, he grappled with the bittersweet nature of leaving behind the connections he had built since arriving from Lyon in January 2022. Guimarães helped the team reach Champions League qualification and celebrated a long-awaited Carabao Cup win in 2025, making his decision even more challenging.
After many sleepless nights filled with uncertainty, he realized it was time to embrace change. With key players like Anthony Gordon and Sandro Tonali departing, and Eddie Howe’s tenure coming to an end, Guimarães understood the moment was right for a fresh challenge. The £75 million transfer to Arsenal has proven fruitful so far, with Guimarães already making an impact.
Arsenal's management saw him as a vital addition, bringing creativity and tenacity to the midfield. He didn’t waste time in showcasing his skills, scoring his first goal for the club against Sunderland in September, which helped secure a 2-0 victory. Just two matches later, he netted the decisive goal against Leeds, further solidifying his role in the squad.
He came close to adding another goal in a thrilling Champions League clash with Bayern Munich, only to be denied by a stunning save from Manuel Neuer. The match ended 2-2, with Arsenal equalizing late thanks to Declan Rice. Guimarães is already looking forward to facing Newcastle on November 21, hoping to recreate the same bonds he cherished at his former club.
“It was tough to say goodbye, especially to Eddie and my teammates,” he shares. “The love I felt at Newcastle was incredible, and I hope to find the same here at Arsenal. Leaving was emotional; I cried with the lads because we were like family. I lost a lot of sleep over it, but sometimes you need to make tough decisions. I’m grateful for my time at Newcastle, but it was time for me to move on.”
His partnership with Declan Rice is blossoming, alongside Martin Ødegaard, with a fluidity that excites fans. Guimarães appreciates the tactical flexibility Arteta brings to the team, allowing him and Rice to adapt their roles as needed. “Declan and I can both play various positions,” he explains. “The manager is working to find the right balance, and I enjoy playing alongside both him and Martin.”
Guimarães recalls the fierce battles he had against Rice, noting that they’ve now transitioned to friends on the pitch. “He texted me before I joined Arsenal, saying, ‘No more fights, we’re friends now,’” he laughs, acknowledging the competitive spirit they shared.
The Brazilian was in disbelief over how Neuer managed to save a close-range header during their recent encounter. “It was a miracle,” he admits. “I asked him how he did it, and he just shrugged it off. He’s one of the best keepers in the world, regardless of age.”
Guimarães has quickly recognized the relentless winning mentality at Arsenal, driven by Arteta's leadership. As they prepare to face Everton at home this Saturday, he feels right at home. “The club's mentality has transformed significantly,” he states. “We don’t settle for draws, we aim for victory. Arteta’s passion and dedication shine through, and we’re all in this together, aiming for the top.”
