Brighton Battles Through Adversity for Victory at Sunderland

Jaouen Hadjam’s powerful shot that found the back of the net for Brighton marked a turning point, sending Sunderland fans heading for the exits.
As the Stadium of Light echoed with discontent and Sunderland manager Régis Le Bris wore a worried expression, Brighton's players and coach Fabian Hürzeler were ready to revel in their triumph.
Even with Pascal Struijk's red card in the second half, Hürzeler’s squad not only held onto third place but also increased their points tally to a solid 13.
While this match wasn't as dominant as their previous 3-0 win over Arsenal, Brighton's resilience is certainly not to be underestimated.
Sunderland, stuck on a mere four points and with just one Premier League victory this season, now face a challenging Europa League fixture against Torreense with their confidence shaken.
The first half was tense, and Kyril Louis-Dreyfus, the club's owner and newly appointed CEO, watched anxiously from the stands. His recent promotion followed the quick exit of interim CEO Tom Burwell, and now he’s tasked with securing a new front-of-shirt sponsor after a deal with Visit Ghana fell through.
At halftime, Louis-Dreyfus could breathe a sigh of relief as the score remained 0-0. Just before the whistle, Struijk came close, hitting the post with a header when Sunderland could have been trailing.
The half was marked by a lack of clear chances, but Enzo Le Fée’s impressive skills provided some sparks, creating opportunities for Wilson Isidor and Thomas Meunier, the latter stepping in for the injured Brian Brobbey.
When Meunier himself went down, Malick Fofana was introduced and quickly showcased his quick footwork and sharp mind. However, this change forced Nilson Angulo onto his weaker right side, leaving some fans questioning the tactical choices after Sunderland started with two full-backs on the right.
Despite this, a brilliant block from Olivier Boscagli denied Meunier a goal, but it’s clear that a specialist right winger is needed in the upcoming January transfer window.
Meanwhile, Sunderland's defense, missing the injured Dan Ballard, faltered as Pascal Gross executed a clever pass that set up Maxim De Cuyper for a perfectly placed low shot that beat goalkeeper Robin Roefs.
This marked Gross’s seventh direct goal involvement in just five Premier League appearances, giving Brighton a well-deserved lead, but their advantage was short-lived as they were soon down to ten men.
Struijk’s poorly timed challenge on Isidor as he surged towards the box resulted in a red card after a VAR review prompted referee Tom Bramall to reassess the situation. Though Brighton was a man down, they maintained a surprising level of control that frustrated Sunderland supporters.
Adding to Sunderland's woes, Xhaka, who had previously faced scrutiny for off-pitch issues, struggled to find his rhythm, perhaps weighed down by recent controversies. His lackluster performance only compounded the frustrations of a team desperate for a turnaround.
